THE RUNDOWN
The No. 17 ranked DBU Patriots (3-1) fell to the UTRGV Vaqueros (3-1) by a ten-run margin Tuesday afternoon at Globe Life Field. The Vaqueros rattled off 11 runs in the ninth inning, on just five hits in the final frame.Â
Once Patriot starter Jerrod Jenkins escaped a three-run first, he delivered three clean innings. Jenkins would finish his day with four innings pitched, amassing seven strikeouts across 69 pitches.
After a Grant Jay RBI double in the bottom of the first, the Patriot offense would knot the game up in the third, thanks to two bases-loaded walks drawn by Chayton Krauss and Landon Underhill. The Pats would take their first lead of the game via a Joey Nerat fielder's choice in the fifth.
Ryan Borberg held the Vaqueros to one run in his Patriot debut, allowing a one-out RBI single. Borberg amassed four strikeouts this afternoon, tossing 48 pitches to get through three frames.
UTRGV knotted the game at four in the top of the sixth before Joey Nerat, one of the hottest bats in the country, reclaimed the lead for the Pats with an RBI single, scoring Tom Poole.Â
Mason Peters, who achieved a six-out save on Saturday, was tasked with the eighth and ninth inning again this afternoon. Peters struck out three in the eighth, but couldn't get through the ninth. The Patriots used three arms to escape the inning, as the lid came off the bottle. Patriot arms issued six free passes in the final frame and allowed five hits.
