No. 17 DBU Comes From Behind to Defeat Oklahoma State in Extra-Inning Thriller

THE RUNDOWN
The No. 17 ranked DBU Patriots (12-4) took down the Oklahoma State Cowboys (9-7) in an 11-inning thriller on Tuesday night. The Patriots overcame a five-run deficit to force extra innings and climbed out of a two-run hole in the bottom of the 11th before walking it off.

Patriot starter Ryan Borberg tossed a scoreless first and second inning before the Cowboys were able to capitalize on a deep fly ball in the third that got lost in the sun, opening the door to a two-out rally. OSU would tack on another in the fourth before Dillon Haines would be called upon to finish the frame.

The Patriot lineup was hitless through the first three innings of tonight's contest, and wouldn't scratch a run across until the sixth. Nathan Humphreys led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, which was immediately followed by Grant Jay's eighth homer of the year.

In the bottom of the seventh, shortstop Luke Heefner launched his first big fly of the season, turning on an inside fastball.

Haines, Tyler Schott, and Mason Peters came out of the bullpen to record the final 16 outs of regulation, throwing 5.1 innings of scoreless baseball.

The Patriot bats stared down a 5-3 deficit going into the bottom of the ninth. Tom Poole launched an opposite-field solo home run before an Oklahoma State error kickstarted the mini-rally which resulted in Luke Heefner driving in the tying run to force extras.

Mason Peters would toss a scoreless tenth, but the DBU offense could not scratch one across in the bottom half.

Ashton Branson started the 11th, but after the Cowboys launched a two-run homer, Zach Todd was called upon to get the last two outs of the frame.

In the bottom half, the Patriots once again faced a two-run deficit in a do-or-die situation. Tom Poole led off the inning with a single up the middle, followed by a Michael Dattalo ground-rule double. With two runners in scoring position, Joey Nerat legged out an infield single to the first baseman, driving in Poole. Jake Bennett would follow up Nerat's single with an RBI groundout, leaving a runner at second with one out.

Joey Nerat would then swipe third base. Nerat's second steal of the night set the table for Luke Heefner's walk-off sacrifice fly to left field.
