Grant Jay Sets DBU Home Run Record in No. 17 Patriots' Routing of UTA

THE RUNDOWN
The No. 17 ranked DBU Patriots (19-9, 4-2 CUSA) pummeled the UT Arlington Mavericks (8-17, 2-4 WAC) needing just seven innings on Tuesday night at Horner Ballpark. As the product of a three-home run night, catcher Grant Jay broke the program record for home runs in a career (54) with his seventh-inning blast.

Scoring opened with a home run frenzy in the bottom half of the first. Nathan Humphreys, Jay, and Chayton Krauss went back-to-back-to-back on three consecutive pitches to give DBU an early 3-0 lead.

That lead was squandered in the top of the second when the Mavericks laced two multi-run doubles to take a 4-3 lead.

The Pats would then score 11 unanswered runs, five of which came in the bottom of the second. Jay, Krauss, and Dylan Schlaegel each sprayed RBI singles as DBU reclaimed the lead.

Avery Duncan came out of the pen in the third and began a chain of scoreless appearances. Duncan tossed two clean frames while facing the minimum six hitters and only needed 14 pitches to do so.

Duncan was relieved by Zach Todd, who went three up three down in the fifth before coming back out in the sixth and stranding the bases loaded, keeping the score at 8-4.

Grant Jay left the yard for the second time to lead off the bottom of the sixth. With two outs in the inning, Keaton Grady doubled to left center, setting up a Dylan Schlaegel RBI single, making it 10-4.

Liam Watt tossed a scoreless seventh, passing the baton to the DBU offense with a chance to send everyone home early.

The first two batsmen of the inning were retired, but Nathan Humphreys worked a two-out full-count walk to extend the inning.

Then stepped in Grant Jay, who was five pitches removed from making history. After working a 2-2 count, Jay received a slider at the bottom of the strike zone and sent it 413 feet over the left field wall, breaking the program career home run record. Grant Jay hit 1,319 feet worth of home runs on his historic night.

Immediately after history was made, a Chayton Krauss double, a Joey Nerat four-pitch walk, and a Keaton Grady two-run double would send the fans home early and joyous.
