THE RUNDOWN
The No. 16 ranked DBU Patriots (36-13, 19-5 CUSA) completed a sweep of the Kennesaw State Owls (25-25, 14-9 CUSA), needing just seven innings on Sunday afternoon at Horner Ballpark. Patriot starter Mason Peters tossed four scoreless innings, striking out seven in his second start of the year.
The teams traded zeroes in the opening frame, but the black and yellow floodgates opened in the second.Â
DBU brought 13 hitters to the plate in an inning that saw eight runs come across in the bottom half. Cody Grebeck opened the scoring with a one-out RBI single, and the other seven runs came with two outs. Grant Jay blooped an RBI single into center field, Chayton Krauss drove in three with a double down the left field line, Ben Tryon punched an RBI single up the middle, and Michael Dattalo slapped a backside single to score the inning's final run. The score would remain 8-0 through the next several innings.
In the top of the fifth, Peters was lifted for another southpaw in the form of Liam Watt.
Chayton Krauss lofted a sac-fly to plate the ninth run in the bottom of the sixth. Joey Nerat then slapped a two-out, two-run single into right field to put DBU in run-rule territory.
Watt came out for his third inning of work in the seventh and tossed a spotless inning, ending the contest early. Liam Watt tossed three no-hit innings out of the bullpen this afternoon.
