THE RUNDOWN
The No. 13 DBU Patriots (41-17) fell to the No. 1 LSU Tigers (45-14) 12-0 in the winners bracket matchup of the Baton Rouge Regional on Saturday evening at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The loss places DBU in an elimination game against Little Rock on Sunday.
Â
In the top of the first, LSU starter Kade Anderson worked around a one out walk to strike out the side. In the bottom half of the inning, after LSU put two runners on base with two outs in the inning, Ethan Frey ripped a two-run double down the right field line to score both runners and give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.
Â
The Patriots would threaten in their half of the second inning. After DBU got the first two runners on base, Adam Berghult hit a screaming line drive to left that was snagged by Derek Curiel, who then threw to first base to double off Keaton Grady to end the inning. In the bottom of the inning, LSU was able to add on to their lead as Chris Stanfield blasted a solo home run to right field to extend the lead to 3-0.Â
Â
In the third, the Tigers were able to scratch across three more runs on a sacrifice bunt by Luis Hernandez and RBI singles from Stanfield and Curiel to extend the lead to 6-0. James Ellwanger then came in relief of Patriots starter Micah Bucknam and struck out four out of the first five batters that he faced.Â
Â
LSU would tack on another run on an RBI ground out by Stanfield to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead. On the mound, Kade Anderson continued to cruise, as he allowed just four hits in seven scoreless innings of work while striking out eleven. Â
Â
An RBI single from LSU's Hernandez in the bottom of the sixth extended the Tigers' lead to 8-0. Steven Milam then came home on a double steal to stretch out the lead to 9-0.Â
Â
In the top half of eighth, after the Patriots loaded the bases with two outs, LSU reliever Jacob Mayers was able to induce a flyout from Chayton Krauss to escape the threat. In the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers added on three more runs to extend the lead to 12-0.
Â
In the ninth, William Schmidt came on in relief and retired three out of the five batters he faced to close out the shutout victory for the Tigers.Â
