Matt Silberman is in his first year as the pitching coach for DBU Baseball, joining the program in June 2026. He comes to DBU with a nine-year track record of elevating talent and constructing dominant staffs.
Â
Silberman has established himself as one of the country’s best pitching developers, combining personal connection with technical intuition, working with some of the top arms in the country. Over the last five seasons at California Baptist, he helped develop seven all-conference selections, including five first-team honorees and two conference pitchers of the year in Michael Malki (2026) and Liam Rocha (2023).
Â
Under Silberman's guidance, four pitchers have gone on to sign with MLB organizations. Spencer Bengard was selected in the 15th round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins after averaging 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings while recording 70 strikeouts against just 18 walks. One year earlier, CJ Culpepper was also drafted by Minnesota following a season in which he posted a 3.26 ERA and 1.14 WHIP while striking out 76 batters and issuing only 24 walks.
Â
In addition to his MLB Draft picks, Silberman has coached two pitchers who signed professional contracts as free agents. Grant Umberger joined the Chicago White Sox organization after a standout 2024 campaign in which he led the Mid-American Conference with a 3.81 ERA and held opponents to a .243 batting average. Rocha, the 2023 WAC Pitcher of the Year, later signed with the Minnesota Twins after leading the conference with 103 strikeouts in 82.1 innings while finishing among the league's top four pitchers in ERA (3.39), hits allowed per nine innings (7.65), strikeouts per nine innings (11.26), and WHIP (1.21).
Â
In 2026, Silberman engineered one of the most dominant pitching staffs in the country at California Baptist. His group attacked the strike zone while stifling offenses, ranking 10th in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.00), 11th in strikeouts per nine innings (10.9), 14th in ERA (4.09), 23rd in WHIP (1.33), 26th in shutouts (4), 32nd in walks allowed per nine innings (3.63), and 35th in hits allowed per nine innings (8.38). The Lancers also established a new program single-season record with 648 strikeouts, surpassing the previous mark of 496 that Silberman's staff set in 2025.
Â
Before his two years at CBU, Silberman spent the 2024 season at the University of Toledo. He guided the Rockets to their best pitching season to date, setting a program record with 514 strikeouts. He also mentored the MAC’s top two leaders in ERA, Grant Umberger (3.81) and Jackson Bergman (3.94).
Â
Prior to his time at Toledo, Silberman served his first stint as the pitching coach at CBU for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. In 2023, two of his pitchers finished among the top three in the Western Athletic Conference in ERA, highlighted by Ryan Delgado's 3.34 mark and Liam Rocha's 3.39 ERA en route to WAC Pitcher of the Year honors. The previous season, the Lancers recorded a then-school-record 431 strikeouts and a 4.57 team ERA, aided by standout campaigns from CJ Culpepper (3.26 ERA) and Drew Necochea (3.42 ERA).
Â
Silberman also spent four seasons in the junior college ranks as the pitching coach at Mt. San Antonio College from 2018 to 2021. During his first two years, he helped guide Mt. SAC to back-to-back California Community College Athletic Association conference championships. In each of his final two seasons, the Mounties ranked among the top 15 teams in the state in strikeouts, including a fifth-place finish with 229 strikeouts in 2021.
Â
Adding to his coaching experience, Silberman brings a player's perspective to University Hill. He spent two seasons as a pitcher at Palomar College, helping the program capture conference championships in both years. He later transferred to Vanguard University, where he advanced to the NAIA World Series in 2015 before earning First Team All-Region honors as a senior in 2016.
Â
Silberman completed a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration at Vanguard University in 2016 and graduated with a Master of Science in Coaching and Exercise Science from Concordia University Irvine in 2019.
