    Recruiting Coordinator/Assistant Coach
Tyler Johnson was named DBU Baseball’s Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Coach in June of 2025. Johnson arrives at DBU following a highly successful tenure as the head coach at McLennan Community College, where he led the Highlanders to national prominence.

In 2025, Johnson guided McLennan to a 48-18 record and a trip to the semifinals of the NJCAA Division I Baseball World Series, continuing a stretch of excellence during his three seasons at the helm. Under his leadership, McLennan compiled a 131-55 overall record and made back-to-back appearances in the NJCAA World Series in 2024 and 2025.

Johnson’s coaching accolades include being named the 2024 ABCA NJCAA Division I Southwest Region Coach of the Year following a 43-19 season in which the Highlanders secured a return trip to Grand Junction.

Prior to becoming head coach, Johnson served as an assistant at McLennan beginning in the fall of 2018. During his four years in that role, the Highlanders captured one conference title (2021), two regional championships (2021 & 2022), and were crowned NJCAA Division I National Champions in 2021.

Player development has been a consistent hallmark of Johnson’s career. Over his six years at McLennan, 44 players earned all-conference honors, and seven were selected in the MLB Draft. Notable draftees include:
  • Connor Phillips - 2nd Round, 2020 (Seattle Mariners)
  • Logan Henderson - 4th Round, 2021 (Milwaukee Brewers)
  • Wyatt Cheney - 10th Round, 2022 (Baltimore Orioles)
Before his time at McLennan, Johnson spent one season as an assistant coach at Blinn College, where he worked with catchers, outfielders, and hitters while also coaching first base. Under his tutelage, Buccaneers catcher Brandon Ashly was named to the 2018 NJCAA Division I Gold Glove Team with a .997 fielding percentage.

A former collegiate player himself, Johnson began his career at Navarro College, where he was a two-time academic all-conference selection and team captain, helping lead the Bulldogs to a conference title in 2015. He later transferred to Concordia University, earning academic honors in both seasons with the Tornados.

Johnson earned an associate degree from Navarro in 2015, graduating magna cum laude. He received his bachelor's degree in business administration/management in 2017, graduating summa cum laude, and his master’s degree in sports administration in 2020, both from Concordia.

He and his wife Bailey, a physical therapist with Ascension Providence, were married on New Year’s Day 2019. He is the son of Skip Johnson, the head baseball coach for the University of Oklahoma.
