Wes Johnson is in his fourth year as assistant coach at Dallas Baptist University. Johnson oversees all aspects of the Patriot pitching staff and assists in recruiting efforts as well. Since arriving at DBU in 2012, Johnson has helped develop eight different pitchers that have been selected in the Major League Draft, including two taken in the top three rounds in Jake Johansen and Cy Sneed.
In 2014, Johnson guided a DBU pitching staff that established new school records in strikeouts (506) and batting average against (.248). Two Patriot pitchers were also named First Team All-Missouri Valley Conference in Brandon Koch and Paul Voelker.
Johnson came to the Patriots after spending his previous four seasons coaching at both the University of Central Arkansas and Southern Arkansas University. During his three seasons in the Southland Conference at the University of Central Arkansas, Johnson's pitching staffs set Division I school records in ERA, strikeouts, batting average against, and fewest walks.
In 2009, Johnson was part of the coaching staff at Southern Arkansas University where the Muleriders posted a 52-11 overall record, which found them ranked No. 1 in the Division II National Poll for 20 weeks. While working with the pitchers, Johnson helped the staff set school records in both strikeouts and walks allowed, while posting a 3.49 team ERA, which ranked 10th in the nation. The staff's 499 strikeouts also set a new Gulf South Conference record.
Johnson's track record for development is also seen in the fact that he has had 19 pitchers drafted or sign professional contracts in the last seven years - led by the 16th overall pick of the 2010 draft, Hayden Simpson, who was taken by the Chicago Cubs.
Prior to joining the staff at Central Arkansas, Johnson spent four seasons as the head coach of Abundant Life High School in Sherwood, Arkansas. During this time period, Johnson guided the Owls to an impressive 102-25 record. In his final two seasons, he led the team to two straight state championship games, which resulted in a state championship in 2006 and a runner-up finish in 2007.
Johnson earned a B.S. in Marketing from the University of Arkansas Monticello. Johnson and his wife Angie have three children - Ryan (21), Anna (15) and Ava (5). The Johnsons attend First Baptist Church in Midlothian, Texas.
