Riley Unger is in his third season as the assistant coach for the DBU Men’s Soccer team. Under Unger’s leadership, the Patriots have reached new heights over the past two seasons.
In 2022, DBU secured their first winning season in program history and finished in second place in the Lone Star Conference regular season standings. The Patriots would eventually reach the semifinals of the LSC Tournament. At season's end, both Ethan Unger and Peyton Voelker were named to the D2CCA All-Region Team, while also garnering Academic All-American honors. DBU also placed four players on the All-LSC Team and four freshmen were named to the league’s All-Freshman Team
In his first year as part of Jess Jobe’s staff, the Patriots posted a five-win season, the most victories for a DBU team since 2017 and saw four players garner All-LSC honors.
During his time on the DBU Men's Soccer team from 2015-2018, Unger played an important role in the midfield for the Patriots. Aside from missing several matches due to injury, Unger started in every game for DBU since his freshman season and served as the team captain his senior year. He ranks second in program history in both career starts (71) and minutes played (5,841). During his time as a student at DBU, Unger received awards such as being named to the Heartland Conference President Honor Roll, Dean's List, and the DBU Sport Management Honor Reward.
Unger's soccer resume includes playing for Liverpool FC and the Shreveport Rafters of the National Premier Soccer League in the 2015 and 2017, respectively. He also played for Texas United of the United Soccer League Two (Formerly PDL), and earned a trial with NTSC, an affiliate of FC Dallas in 2019. A native of Frisco, Texas, Unger played club soccer for the Dallas Texans under Hassan Nazari and high school soccer at Frisco Centennial High School where he earned honors such as District MVP, 1st Team-All State, and was a nominee for Gatorade Player of the Year in 2015.
Unger graduated from DBU in May of 2019 with his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sport Management and minor in Management. He recently earned his Masters of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Marketing from DBU in 2021.
Since graduating from University Hill, Unger has served as the Compliance and Academic Services Coordinator for the DBU Athletic Department after serving as the Graduate Student Assistant to the Director of Athletics. He has also been the color commentator for both Men's and Women's Soccer.
