Marcus Wood

Marcus Wood is his fourth season as the Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Dallas Baptist University, bringing with him a legacy as one of the most successful coaches in the history of NCAA Women’s Soccer. Now in his 25th year as a head coach, Wood owns a remarkable career record of 434-50-40, and his .867 winning percentage ranks third all-time across all NCAA divisions. His 434 career victories place him 21st in NCAA history, just 10 wins shy of breaking into the top 20, and he is among an elite group of only 36 coaches nationwide to surpass the 400-win milestone.

In his first three seasons at the helm, Wood guided DBU to three consecutive trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Wood also led DBU to Lone Star Conference regular season titles in each of his first two years and hoisted the LSC Championship trophy in 2022 and 2023.

A two-time LSC Coach of the Year, Wood has produced six All-Americans and 15 All-South Central Region selections, including the 2023 D2CCA South Central Region Player of the Year, Taylor Tufts.

DBU is coming off a 2024 campaign that saw them advance to the South Central Regional as the No. 3 seed after a runner-up finish in the Lone Star Conference regular season standings. In postseason play, DBU defeated MSU Denver in the First Round of the South Central Regional before falling in a hard-fought 1-0 battle to Angelo State in the Second Round. The Patriots closed the year with a 16-3-3 overall record and finished the season ranked No. 15 nationally by the United Soccer Coaches.
 
In 2023, the Patriots clinched their fifth consecutive Lone Star Conference regular season title and their second straight under Marcus Wood. After winning the LSC Championship on their home field, DBU earned the No. 1 seed in the South Central Region for the second consecutive year. Despite falling to UC Colorado Springs in Round Two of the NCAA Tournament, the Patriots finished the year with a 14-1-4 record and were ranked No. 19 in the final United Soccer Coaches Poll.

In his first season at DBU in 2022, Wood was named the LSC Coach of the Year after guiding the Patriots to a 17-2-1 record and both the conference regular season and tournament titles. DBU claimed the top spot in the United Soccer Coaches poll entering the third week of the season and remained the No. 1 ranked team in the nation entering the postseason. After earning the top seed in the South Central Region, DBU’s season culminated with their fourth consecutive trip to the Sweet 16 where they eventually fell in the regional finals. The Patriots finished the season ranked No. 7 in the nation, tying the 2015 and 2020 teams for the second-highest end-of-season ranking in school history.

In three seasons under Marcus Wood’s direction, the Patriots have finished the year ranked in the top 25 nationally in 27 statistical categories. As one of the top offensive teams in the country, DBU has ranked in the top 10 in each of the last three years in both total assists and assists per game.

Wood came to DBU from Hardin-Simmons University, where he was the head coach for 22 seasons and guided HSU to 19 consecutive American Southwest Conference titles, 19 trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament, and a national title in 2010. During Wood's tenure at Hardin-Simmons, he was a two-time United Soccer Coaches National Coach of the Year (2010 and 2020), was named the West Region Coach of the Year on eight occasions, and was a seven-time ASC Coach of the Year.  Wood also developed 31 All-Americans, 33 Conference Players of the Year, 75 All-Region selections, 153 All-Conference performers, and 26 Academic All-Americans while at HSU.

A regular in the NCAA postseason, Hardin-Simmons reached the Final Four in both 2010 and 2017, winning the program's first national championship in 2010 after finishing the season with a 24-0-1 record.  Under Wood's leadership, HSU made 10 trips to the Sweet 16 and was nationally ranked each year, dating back to 2001.

Before arriving at Hardin-Simmons in 2000, Wood was an assistant coach at both Cumberland College in Kentucky and Gardner-Webb University in North Carolina.  A native of Bettendorf, Iowa, Wood earned his bachelor's degree at Olivet Nazarene University in 1997 and completed his master's in sports management and recreation management at Hardin-Simmons in 2003.

Wood and his wife Kelley have two children, Kamryn and Alex.
