Patriots Win in Overtime

The Dallas Baptist University Patriots used a 7-0 run in overtime to knock off the Falcons from the University of Texas Permian Basin, 65-61, Saturday afternoon at the Burg Center. Playing their fourth game in the past seven days, the Patriots moved to 8-5 on the season, and 3-1 in the Heartland Conference.

The Falcons used a deliberate offense and a 3-2 zone on defense for most of the game in an attempt to slow down a Patriot offense averaging 84 points in conference play. However Dallas Baptist never trailed in the game and held as much as a nine point lead on two separate occasions.

The Patriots opened up a 10 point lead early in the second half on a jumper by Senior Bryan Baumann, but the Falcons used an 11-0 run to tie the game at 36 with 9:56 remaining. Again up by nine with 4:52 to go, the Patriots struggled to find an opening in the Falcon zone and were held scoreless the final five minutes of regulation. UTPB used a 9-0 run to tie the game with 57 seconds left, but Elijah Jordan's jumper as time expired was off the mark, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra period, the Patriots turned to the inside presence of Jordan McGowen and Eddie Gloviak to break down the Falcon zone. On the first play, Gloviak connected on a short jumper assisted by Armie Lewis. The ensuing possession, McGowen drew the defense to the high post and again, found Gloviak open underneath for a three-point play. The Patriots would not relinquish their lead this time and scored on their final five possessions to seal the 65-61 win.

McGowen turned in an outstanding performance with his second double-double of the season. His 18 points and career best 17 rebounds led the way for the Patriots. Gloviak was a perfect 6 for 6 on the night and ended with 17 points. Elijah Jordan and Justin Bailey led the Falcons in scoring with 15 points each.

The Patriots will return to action at the Burg Center on January 11, as they take on non-conference opponent, Tarleton State University for the second time this season. DBU lost the first matchup against the Texans, 81-71, back on November 17. Tip-off for Monday's game is slated for 7:00 p.m.
