Patriots Defeat Texans

The Patriots hosted the Texans from Tarleton State University in a non-conference matchup Monday night at the Burg Center. After 17 lead changes in the first 36 minutes, the Patriots used a 9-1 run in the final four to seal the win, 76-67. The victory avenges an 81-71 loss to the Texans earlier this year and moves the Patriots to 9-5 on the season.

DBU jumped out of the gate with back-to-back 3-pointers by Armie Lewis and Bryan Baumann. Braxton Adamson's jumper on the next possession gave DBU an early 8-2 lead, but the Texans came right back as they used a 7-2 run to pull within one, 10-9.

The Patriots led the way most of the first half, but were unable to build much of a lead. Effran Bryant's 3-pointer with 2:38 remaining, gave the Texans their first lead of the game, 25-24. The teams traded baskets the remainder of the half before Adamson's free throw with five seconds remaining tied the game for the fifth time, 36-36.

Jordan McGowen, the Patriots leading scorer the past three games, opened the second half with a jumper, but the Texans took the lead right back a minute later with Bryant's three from the wing. The Texans held as much as a six point advantage at the 7:40 mark, but DBU responded with a McGowen jumper the ensuing possession.

The Texans went without a field goal for over six minutes, and DBU's Bryan Baumann connected on his 3-pointer with 2:01 remaining to give DBU a 69-63 cushion. Trailing by six, the Texans were forced to foul, but the Patriots connected on 7-8 from the free throw line to seal the win, 76-67.

McGowen paced the Patriots for the fourth straight game with 18 points and nine rebounds. Adamson was 3-4 from the 3-point line with 16 points, while Eddie Gloviak posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Patriots resume Heartland Conference play on Thursday, January 14, as they head to Kansas to take on Newman University. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
