The Dallas Baptist Patriots suffered their second conference loss of the season Thursday night, as they fell to Newman University, 86-81. The Patriots (9-6) are currently in third place in the Heartland Conference with a record of 3-2.
Dallas Baptist led by as much as seven points in the first half when
Bryan Baumann connected on his 3-pointer at the 5:41 mark.
Braxton Adamson's three less than a minute later kept the Patriot lead at seven, but the Jets used a 13-5 run over the next five minutes to take a one point lead at the break, 40-39.
The game stayed close in the second half, with neither team able to open up more than a six point advantage. After 12 lead changes in the first 10 minutes, Baumann connected on his third 3-pointer of the night, giving the Patriots a six point lead with 8:16 to play.
Refusing to fold, Newman responded with a Keaton Schultz bucket on the ensuing possession that sparked a 9-0 run. The Jets erased their deficit and took the lead for good when Jaray Mathews connected on his jumper with 4:43 remaining. Jake Darby's layup with 47 seconds left pushed the Jet lead to six, and sealed the win for Newman, 86-81.
Adamson led all scorers on the night with 21, while
Jordan McGowen turned in another all-around game with 20 points and nine rebounds.
The Patriots continue their four game road swing on Saturday afternoon as they take on Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
