Patriots Hold Off Dustdevils

Box Score

The Dallas Baptist University Patriots defeated Texas A&M International on Thursday evening by the score of 76-68. The Patriots (11-8) complete the two-game sweep of the Dustdevils (7-11) and move to 5-4 in Heartland Conference action.

The Patriots were patient on offense and jumped out to an early lead less than five minutes into the game. With the shot clock winding down, Jordan McGowen found Armie Lewis in the corner for an open three, giving DBU a 17-9 lead at the 14:24 mark. However, the Dustdevils held the Patriots scoreless over the next 8:32, and scored nine unanswered to take an 18-17 lead. Bryan Baumann's jumper with 10 seconds left in the half pushed the Patriot lead back to seven as both teams headed to the locker room.

The Dustdevils wasted no time after they returned from the break. They connected on their first six shots and took a 35-33 advantage with 16:32 left on the clock. The Patriots responded with a 15-3 run of their own capped by BJ Dale's jumper, and opened up a 48-38 lead six minutes later. Braxton Adamson's jumper with 2:44 left in the game extended the Patriot lead to 13, and pushed the game out of reach for the Dustdevils.

The Patriots' unselfish play resulted in 21 assists, their highest total for any game this season. Seven DBU players recorded at least one assist on the night, with McGowen, Lewis, and Jared Whitmire all accounting for at least four apiece.

Eddie Gloviak led the Patriots with 16 while Baumann and Adamson finished with 15 and 12, respectively. Whitmire had an outstanding game as he dished out six assists and only one turnover in 22 minutes of play.

The Patriots return to action Saturday, January 30, as they prepare to take on St. Edward's University. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
