Patriots Blast Howard Payne on Homecoming Night

The Dallas Baptist Patriot Basketball Team picked up a definitive, 94-56 win over Howard Payne University on Saturday night, in their annual Homecoming Game. The Patriots are now 2-1 on the season, and undefeated at the Burg Center.

DBU never trailed in the game after jumping out to an early lead that gave them a 15-5 advantage by the first media timeout. A jumper by Junior T.J. Clark with 2:22 remaining in the first period gave the Patriots their biggest lead of the first half, 37-19.

After a 41-24 lead at the half, DBU never let up in the second thanks to good shooting and strong defense. With 3:31 left in the game, Junior Ishmael Awange threw down a dunk that capped a 17-8 run for the Patriots, giving them an 87-48 lead. With just under a minute to play, the Patriots put an exclamation point on their win after Sophomore Joseph Carrington came up with a steal and found Freshman Ryan Marsh for the break-away slam.

The Patriots connected on nine of 24 three-point attempts in game, and forced 26 Yellowjacket turnovers that resulted in 21 Patriot points. Even the reserves got it done for DBU, with a staggering 43 bench points compared to only 19 from the Yellowjackets.

DBU was led by Senior Braxton Adamson who ended the night with 22 points. Junior Jordan McGowen finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Freshman Russ Johnson reached double-digits for the first time in his young career with 12 points.

The Patriots will continue their five-game home stand on Tuesday against East Central University before breaking for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
