Patriots Blast Jets, 88-69

The Dallas Baptist Patriot Basketball Team defeated the Jets from Newman University Saturday afternoon by the score of 88-69. The Patriots (16-9) entered today's matchup one game behind the third place Jets, but with the win, are now tied for third with a 9-5 Heartland Conference record.

Braxton Adamson connected on five three pointers on his way to a game-best 28 points, while Jordan McGowen and Bryan Baumann each scored 14 for the Patriots. McGowen turned in his third double-double of the season with 14 rebounds, and also added 6 assists.

The Patriots never trailed in the game and held as much as 23 point lead in the second half thanks to their 45 percent shooting from behind the arc.

With DBU leading 30-19, McGowen stole the ball with 6:45 left in the first half, and Armie Lewis found a streaking Jared Whitmire for a layup, giving the Patriots a 13 point lead. The Patriot defense was a key factor in the game as they forced 12 Jet turnovers in the first half alone, giving them a 44-36 at the break.

DBU poured it on the first 10 minutes of the second half, outscoring Newman 24-11, and taking a 68-48 lead on a three by Whitmire. Baumann connected on a three with the shot clock winding down a minute later pushing the lead to 23.

The Jets struggled from the field in the second half, shooting only 33 percent, and were only able to pull as close as 16 on a three from Jake Darby, with 2:42 left. DBU finished the game on a couple of free throws from Lewis, giving the Patriots their 19 point win.

The Patriots will host St. Mary's University this Thursday, February 25, at the Burg Center. Tip-off is set for a 7:00 p.m.
