The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Basketball Team suffered a 106-103, overtime loss in the second round of the Heartland Conference Tournament Friday evening. Playing the University of the Incarnate Word for the second time in less than a week, the Patriots (18-11) were hoping to avenge last Saturday's loss in which they fell to the Cardinals after a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Eric Stewart.
After leading for the majority of the first half, and taking a four point lead into halftime, the Cardinals started the second half with three straight three-pointers to take a 54-40 lead with 16:23 left in the game.
The Patriots chipped away at the lead with a couple of layups by
Eddie Gloviak and a three-point play by
Bryan Baumann to cut the DBU deficit to seven. UIW Guard Pierce Caldwell hit another three, his sixth of the night, to build the Cardinal lead back to 12 less than a minute later.
Four free throws by
Braxton Adamson and
Eddie Gloviak trimmed the Cardinal lead to four with 1:42 remaining. Baumann hit a three the ensuing possession, and a steal by Adamson led to a
Jordan McGowen layup to make it a one point game.
After two free throws by the Cardinals, the Patriots had the ball with 26 seconds remaining, trailing by three. Just as he had done a minute earlier, Baumann connected on another three with 14 seconds left that sent the game to overtime. All together, DBU outscored the Cardinals, 18-9, over the final five minutes of regulation.
Jared Whitmire opened the overtime period with a three for the Patriots, followed by another McGowen layup to give DBU a five point lead. After four consecutive free throws by the Cardinals, Adamson converted a three-point play after he was fouled, to keep the Patriot lead at four with 2:56 left.
The Cardinals used two three-point plays of their own to take a two point lead with 1:59 remaining. Baumann tied the game 20 seconds later with a pair of free throws, but UIW grabbed four offensive rebounds in the final 1:14 that resulted in four crucial points for the Cardinals. Baumann hit another three on the Patriots' final possession, but it wasn't enough as they fell, 106-103.
Baumann and Adamson led the way for the Patriots with 27 points apiece, and combined to knock down seven of DBU's 10 three-pointers. Gloviak was the only other Patriot to reach double digits with his 13 points and four rebounds.
The Patriots will now move on to postseason play in the NCCAA Tournament where they will face Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Thursday, March 11, in Waxahachie, Texas. The Patriots hold the number one seed in the tournament and will tip-off at 8:00 p.m.
