After Strong Start, Patriots Fall in the Ninth

The Dallas Baptist Patriot Baseball Team scored nine runs in the first inning, but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Wednesday night at Patriot Field. With the 13-11 loss, the Patriots drop to 18-15 on the season. 

Junior Jared Stafford picked up the loss for the Patriots after pitching two innings, allowing four hits but only two unearned runs, and striking out three.

After a scoreless first for the Red Raiders, the Patriots took an early 9-0 lead in the bottom of the inning. Senior Austin Knight led off with a single up the middle, and advanced to second after Junior Tyler Robbins was hit by a pitch. Junior Jason Krizan doubled to score Knight, making it a 1-0 game. After four consecutive walks by Texas Tech pitcher Brandon Petite, Senior Travis Meiners cleared the bases and made it a 7-0 game with his triple to right center. Sophomore Ben Mrachek scored Meiners with a RBI single, and Krizan grounded out, scoring another run for the Patriots to give DBU a 9-0 lead.

Texas Tech responded with four runs in the top of the second, but freshman Duncan McAlpine tacked on another run for the Patriots in the bottom of the inning when he reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Freshman Austin Elkins who led off the inning with a single.

The Red Raiders scored two in the third, four in the fifth, and one in the sixth to take a 11-10 lead.

After Mrachek led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk, Knight connected on a sacrifice bunt, moving Mrachek to second. Senior Ryan Enos brought Mrachek across the plate with his 27th RBI of the season, a single to knot the game at 11.

Texas Tech scored two in the top of the ninth, and held the Patriots scoreless in the bottom of the inning, for the 13-11 win.

The Patriots will return to action tomorrow, as they welcome Grambling State University to Patriot Field. The first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
