The Dallas Baptist Patriot Basketball Team earned their first conference victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating St. Edward's University, 65-59. The Patriots move to 9-6 on the season with the win, and improve to 1-2 in the Heartland Conference.
Sophomore
Nick Fox led all scorers in the game with 21 points while Senior
Braxton Adamson returned to his old form finishing with 18.
The Patriots jumped out to an early lead in the game, limiting the Hilltoppers to only six points in the first nine minutes of action. A free throw from Fox gave the Patriots their biggest lead of the game, 18-6, with 10:57 left in the opening period.
St. Edward's responded late in the half with a 12-2 run of their own, to take a 26-25 lead at the break. The two point advantage at halftime would be the only time the Hilltoppers would lead in the game.
The two teams remained neck and neck after the break, with four ties coming in the first ten minutes of the second half. A jumper by Junior T.J. Clark at the 8:30 mark sparked a 12-0 run by the Patriots, giving DBU the lead for good. A pair of layups from Senior
Jared Whitmire and Fox gave DBU a 53-41 advantage with 4:44 left in the game.
The Patriots connected on eight free throws with under a minute to play to seal the six point win.
DBU will have a nine-day break before their next contest on January 24. The Patriots will host Newman University next Monday at 7:00 p.m.
