The Dallas Baptist Patriot Basketball Team held a five point lead late in the game against Newman University on Monday night, but eventually fell to the visiting Jets, 78-84. With the loss, the Patriots (9-7) drop to 1-3 in the Heartland Conference.
The Patriots trailed by as much as 14 points in the first half, but managed to trim their deficit to only four points at the break, thanks to a pair of free throws from Sophomore
Nick Fox.
DBU took their first lead of the night just four minutes into the second half, when Junior
Armie Lewis connected on his second three-pointer of the game to give the Patriots a 45-43 lead. DBU's offense continued to roll over the ensuing six minutes, building an eight point lead over the Jets. Junior
Jordan McGowen's three pointer with 8:46 left, capped off a 9-3 run, giving DBU a 63-55 lead.
Still holding a five point lead with 6:31 left, the Patriots turned the ball over three consecutive times, allowing the Jets back into the game. A Jet three-pointer on the next possession, gave Newman a 72-69 lead with 4:19 left on the clock.
A free throw by McGowen with 2:30 left tied the game for the fourth time, but Newman took the lead for good on the next possession with a pair of free throws of their own. The Jets closed out the game on an 11-6 run, taking the 84-78 win.
Fox led all scorers in the game with 21 points, and picked up the double-double with 11 rebounds. McGowen and Junior T.J. Clark each chipped in 12 points for the Patriots.
DBU will continue their three-game home stand on Saturday, as they welcome Arkansas Fort Smith to the Burg Center. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
