The Dallas Baptist Patriot Baseball Team remained undefeated on Tuesday evening, after defeating Oklahoma State at Reynolds Stadium, 7-3. The win improves DBU to 4-0 on the season after picking up the sweep of Indiana State last weekend.
In his second appearance of the season, junior pitcher
Jordan Staples earned his first win, throwing five innings, allowing four hits, two runs, while striking out one.
After a stellar weekend in which he hit three homeruns including two grand slams, Sophomore
Austin Elkins picked up right where he left off, blasting a lead-off homerun to make it an early 1-0 lead for DBU. In only four games this season, Elkins now has four homeruns and 10 RBI to lead the Patriots at the plate.
The Cowboys evened the game at one in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to a RBI single by Dane Phillips.
The Patriots increased their lead in the top of the fifth, as they pushed three more runs across the plate. A pair of leadoff doubles by Seniors
Tyler Robbins and
Jason Krizan scored one run and gave the Patriots a man on second with no outs. Junior
Joel Hutter followed with a walk, chasing Cowboy pitcher Josh Neilson from the mound, and giving DBU runners on first and second with no outs.
After Junior
Ryan Behmanesh laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners, Krizan scored on a wild pitch to make it a 3-1 game. Junior
Kenny Hatcher capped off the scoring in the inning with his sacrifice fly to center that pushed Hutter across the plate.
Oklahoma State added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Patriot bats went back to work in the seventh and eighth. Krizan used a triple to pick up his second RBI of the game in the top half of the seventh, and eventually scored later in the inning thanks to a double from Hutter.
Holding a 6-2 advantage through seven, DBU tacked on their final run of the game in the eighth, after Freshman K.J. Alexander scored on a RBI single by Robbins.
After allowing one run in the bottom of the eighth, the Patriots brought in Senior
Chris Haney to seal the deal. Haney retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to seal the 7-3 victory for DBU.
The Patriots will participate in the UT-Arlington tournament this weekend, facing UTA on Thursday, Missouri State on Friday, and South Dakota State on Saturday morning. Thursday's game against the Mavericks is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
