The Dallas Baptist Patriot Basketball Team traveled to Wichita, Kansas on Saturday, only to fall to the Newman Jets, 77-84. The loss drops to the Patriots to 11-9 on the season, and 3-4 in the Heartland Conference.
Sophomore
Nick Fox led the way for the Patriots as he finished with 30 points and seven rebounds, his second 30-point effort in as many games. In Thursday's win over Oklahoma Panhandle, Fox led all scorers with a game-high 31 points. The forward from Colorado Springs, Colorado, shot 11-for-15 from the floor on Saturday afternoon and 8-for-11 from the charity stripe.
DBU trailed for the majority of the first half, including a 12-point deficit with just over seven minutes on the clock. Thanks to a strong shooting effort by the Jets that yielded 52 percent from the floor compared to only 38 percent from the Patriots, Newman held an 11-point advantage at the break.
The Patriots opened the second half with an 8-0 run thanks to a pair of layups from Fox, a jumper from Junior T.J. Clark, and another layup from Junior
Jordan McGowen. Within the first three minutes, DBU had trimmed their 11-point deficit to only three points, 40-43.
Newman managed to push their lead back to eight with 11 minutes left, but DBU mounted a furious comeback over the ensuing five minutes. Clark spurred the run with his free throw, but it was Fox who did most of the damage. The Jets struggled to stop the forward as he scored seven points throughout the 13-2 Patriot run. Senior
Braxton Adamson knocked down a three-pointer to give the Patriots their first lead of the second half, and Fox's layup capped the streak, giving DBU a 66-63 lead with 6:15 left in the game.
However, the Jets responded with an 18-3 run of their own over the next four minutes, recapturing the lead, and taking a 81-69 advantage with just under two minutes left. Newman's cushion proved to be too much to overcome for DBU, as they held on for the 84-77 win.
Adamson ended the night with 14 points for DBU, while Clark finished with 12 points and four assists.
The Patriots will now return home for their next contest against St. Edward's University on Monday. Game-time at the Burg Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
