The Dallas Baptist Patriot Baseball Team defeated the 8th ranked Horned Frogs from TCU, 4-3, Tuesday evening at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth. The win over the preseason favorites improves the Patriots to 6-2 overall.
Junior pitcher
Jordan Staples picked up the win for the Patriots, coming on in the seventh and throwing two scoreless innings. Staples replaced starter
Brandon Williamson who went six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits.
TCU captured an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Taylor Featherston's solo shot over the right field wall.
Still facing a one-run deficit after the fourth inning, the Patriots managed two runs in the fifth thanks to solid base running by Junior
Landon Anderson and a pair of Horned Frog errors. With one out, Anderson drew a walk, stole second, and then advanced to third after a failed pickoff attempt by the TCU pitcher. Senior
Josh Wilson's sacrifice fly yielded another TCU error, this time from the right fielder, allowing Anderson to score.
After Sophomore
Austin Elkins' ground out advanced Wilson to third, Senior
Tyler Robbins delivered a two-out double, scoring Wilson and giving the Patriots a 2-1 advantage.
The lead didn't last long for the Patriots as TCU tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the inning, recapturing a 3-2 lead. Jantzen Witte picked up a RBI with his double down the left field line, and later scored on a RBI single from teammate Featherston.
DBU evened the score in the top of the sixth after a leadoff single by Junior
Joel Hutter got the inning started. Junior
Ryan Behmanesh doubled to advance Hutter to third, and Junior
Kenny Hatcher picked up his ninth RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Entering the final inning tied at three, Sophomore
Duncan McAlpine led off for the Patriots with a single through the right side and later advanced to third courtesy of an Anderson single. With the go-ahead run only 90 feet away, Wilson picked up his second RBI of the night with a single to right, giving DBU a 4-3 lead.
Senior
Chris Haney entered the game in the ninth and sealed the win for the Patriots, retiring three of the four batters he faced.
DBU will return to the field this Thursday as they host a four-team tournament at Patriot Field. UT-Arlington, New Orleans, and Wichita State will take part in the tournament with the first game being Thursday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The Patriots will take to the field Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. as they face the University of New Orleans.
