The Dallas Baptist Patriot Basketball Team won their first ever NCCAA National Championship with a 78-64 victory over Spring Arbor University on Saturday night in Oakland City, Indiana. The Patriots won six consecutive NCCAA Tournament games before eventually being crowned the national champs, and finish their season with an overall record of 20-12.
Sophomore
Nick Fox led all scorers in the game with 24 points and six rebounds while Junior
Jordan McGowen followed closely behind with 20 points and eight rebounds. Senior
Braxton Adamson chipped in 12 points in his final game as a Patriot.
The Patriots built up a quick lead in the game thanks to four three-pointers in the first four minutes of action. Adamson, Fox, McGowen, and Junior
Armie Lewis all connected from downtown throughout the Patriots' first seven possessions, giving DBU a 16-6 advantage.
Spring Arbor came roaring back with a run of their own, eventually taking a one point lead, 19-18, with 12:15 left. Twelve minutes and 12 lead changes later, Spring Arbor held a 44-39 lead as both teams headed to the locker room for the break.
The Patriots came out strong in the second half, quickly erasing the Cougar lead with a 13-3 run. McGowen's jumper three minutes into the second period gave DBU a 45-44 advantage, but it turned out to be a lead the Patriots wouldn't relinquish.
Still clinging to a four point advantage with 8:44 to go, DBU scored nine unanswered over the ensuing four minutes to take a commanding 68-55 lead.
The Patriots continued to pour it on throughout the remainder of the game, taking as much as a 17 point lead with just under a minute remaining. Lewis connected on two final free throws with 47 seconds remaining to secure the 78-64 DBU win.
"God is so good," commented Head Coach
Blake Flickner after the game. "I am so proud of this team and how they have represented DBU. They have given glory to the Lord through it all. So many guys made big plays throughout the tournament for us," he added.
Fox was named to the NCCAA All-Tournament Team as well as being selected a Second Team All-American. Adamson was also voted to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts, and was awarded Honorable Mention All-American.
Adamson captured his third award along with teammate Lewis as both were named NCCAA Scholar Athletes for their efforts on the court and in the classroom.
