The Dallas Baptist Patriot Baseball Team picked up two more wins over Mississippi Valley State on Friday evening at Patriot Field, defeating the Delta Devils in double header action, 21-1 and 17-14.
Game One
Junior
Jordan Staples picked up the win for the Patriots in game one after going six innings, allowing no runs and four hits.
The Patriots had 16 hits scattered by eight different players, led by Junior
Landon Anderson who hit for the cycle. Anderson went five-for-six with six RBI, while Senior
Jason Krizan and Junior
Logan Brumley picked up four RBI each.
DBU scored at least one run in each of the first five innings of action, including a six run fourth and a seven run fifth. Four Patriots blasted homeruns in the game including Anderson (1st inning), Junior
Ryan Behmanesh (1st inning), Krizan (4th inning), and Brumley (5th inning). Brumley's grand slam in the fifth capped off the Patriot slugfest, giving them the 21-0 lead.
Anderson started the game off with a leadoff homerun in the top of the first, giving DBU a 1-0 lead. He singled in both the second and third innings, picking up two more RBI, followed by a two-RBI triple in the fourth. Anderson completed the cycle with a RBI double in the fifth that gave DBU a 16-0 advantage.
Mississippi Valley State managed to score their first and only run in the seventh, off a solo homerun.
Game Two
In game two, the Delta Devils jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first inning, chasing DBU starter Sophomore
Jake Johansen, who was charged with seven runs on two hits, three walks and two hit batsmen. Sophomore
Will Lane relieved Johansen to get out of the inning, giving up two more runs, leaving DBU down 9-0 after one.
The Patriots managed to score one run in the bottom half of the inning. Senior
Tyler Robbins doubled and scored on a RBI single by Behmanesh, making the score 9-1 after one.
The Delta Devils tacked on two more runs in the top of the second inning, resulting in DBU turning to Sophomore
Michael Smith to get out of the inning, trailing 11-1.
DBU responded with two runs of their own, after Elkins walked and later scored on a RBI single by Freshmen
KJ Alexander. Anderson scored Alexander, after reaching on an error, making the score 11-3.
MVSU added another run in the third inning, on three hits, to increase their lead to 12-3.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Patriots scored two runs, after Krizan led off the inning with a double and Behmanesh walked. Hutter followed with a RBI single and Elkins added a RBI groundout, to leave the score 12-5.
DBU struck again in the fourth, scoring seven runs. Hatcher walked to start the inning and Robbins doubled to set up a RBI double by Krizan. Behmanesh followed with a single and Hutter walked to load the bases. Elkins reached on a walk, scoring another Patriot run and Wilson followed with a two RBI single. Anderson reached on an infield error, scoring Wilson to tie the game at 12-12, after 4 innings.
The Delta Devils retook the lead in the seventh, after a leadoff walk and a single, which set up a sacrifice bunt, making the score 13-12.
The Patriots took their first lead of the night in the bottom half of the inning. Krizan started the inning with a bunt base hit and Hutter drew a walk. Sophomore
Duncan McAlpine came in to pinch hit and delivered a RBI single up the middle to score one run, and Wilson followed with a RBI single of his own, to give DBU a 14-13 lead.
In the top of the eighth, MSVU scored one run to tie the game at 14-14. DBU went to closer Senior
Chris Haney, who relieved Smith, after pitching five and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs, while striking out seven.
The Patriots answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Robbins singled and Krizan walked, to set up a RBI double by Behmanesh. Hutter added a RBI sacrifice fly and Haney scored the final run of the game on a squeeze bunt, giving DBU the 17-14 lead.
Haney picked up the win, improving to 3-2 on the season, while striking out two and pitching the final five outs.
The Patriots will look to complete the sweep of the Delta Devils tommorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
