A three-run first by the Lumberjacks was followed by two scoreless innings before the Patriots struck again. Trailing 3-1, DBU posted five runs on two hits in the top half of the fourth, recapturing a 6-3 advantage. After leadoff singles by Juniors
Joel Hutter and
Kenny Hatcher, Haney loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Sophomore
Austin Elkins then scored the first run of the inning by drawing a walk, chasing the SFA starter from the mound. Anderson's RBI groundout tied the game at two runs apiece, and Haney scored on a wild pitch, regaining the lead for the Patriots, 4-3. The final two runs of the inning came after a SFA fielding error that scored Robbins and Elkins.
After Lane held the Lumberjacks scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, DBU tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth. Haney reached on a walk and was brought home by Elkins' RBI triple to center field, and Anderson pushed Elkins across with his RBI single to give the Patriots an 8-3 advantage.
Those eight runs proved to be enough for the Patriots as SFA was only able to post one in the sixth and three in the eighth.
The Patriots will return to Patriot Field later this week as they welcome Alcorn State for a four-game series. Game one will be Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m.
