DBU Baseball Knocks Off SFA With 8-7 Win

Box Score

The Dallas Baptist Patriot Baseball Team defeated Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday evening in Nacogdoches by the score of 8-7. With the win, the Patriots improve their overall record to 33-15.

Sophomore Will Lane picked up the win for DBU after pitching four innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits. Freshman Patrick Hicks and Junior Michael Smith each threw one and two thirds innings before Senior Chris Haney entered the game in the eighth and picked up his tenth save of the year.

DBU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Senior Tyler Robbins was hit by a pitch and Junior Landon Anderson and Senior Jason Krizan each drew walks to load the bases. Junior Ryan Behmanesh pushed the first run across with a sacrifice fly to left field.

A three-run first by the Lumberjacks was followed by two scoreless innings before the Patriots struck again. Trailing 3-1, DBU posted five runs on two hits in the top half of the fourth, recapturing a 6-3 advantage. After leadoff singles by Juniors Joel Hutter and Kenny Hatcher, Haney loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Sophomore Austin Elkins then scored the first run of the inning by drawing a walk, chasing the SFA starter from the mound. Anderson's RBI groundout tied the game at two runs apiece, and Haney scored on a wild pitch, regaining the lead for the Patriots, 4-3. The final two runs of the inning came after a SFA fielding error that scored Robbins and Elkins.

After Lane held the Lumberjacks scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, DBU tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth. Haney reached on a walk and was brought home by Elkins' RBI triple to center field, and Anderson pushed Elkins across with his RBI single to give the Patriots an 8-3 advantage.

Those eight runs proved to be enough for the Patriots as SFA was only able to post one in the sixth and three in the eighth.

The Patriots will return to Patriot Field later this week as they welcome Alcorn State for a four-game series. Game one will be Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m.
