Box Score
The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Baseball Team improved to 34-15 on the year after taking the first game of the series against Alcorn State, 4-3, on Thursday evening.
Senior Brandon Williamson improved to 9-1 on the year after throwing seven and two thirds innings, allowing two earned runs on ten hits, and striking out two.
In his final at bat of the night, Senior Jason Krizan tied the single-season doubles record with his 36th double in the bottom of the seventh. Entering the game only one off the NCAA mark, Krizan sent a 3-2 pitch to the gap in right center, resulting in a standing ovation at Patriot Field. Krizan now has seven games left in the season to break the all-time record, set by LSU's Brad Hawpe in 2000.
With Alcorn State holding a 1-0 lead, the Patriots tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth. Junior Joel Hutter blasted his eighth homerun of the year with a leadoff shot over the left field wall.
ASU scored one in the top of the fifth, but the Patriots quickly recaptured the lead after scoring two runs in the sixth. After a leadoff single by Hutter, Junior Landon Anderson singled with a bunt to give the Patriots two runners on with no outs. After a sacrifice fly from Sophomore Duncan McAlpine, Junior Kenny Hatcher tied the game once again with a RBI single to right field. Sophomore Austin Elkins gave the Patriots the lead for good with a sacrifice fly to left.
McAlpine tacked on another run for the Patriots in the bottom of the eighth, making it a 4-2 lead. His RBI single to right center scored Anderson who had reached on a bunt.
After scoring one in the top of the ninth, the Braves' rally fell short after Senior Chris Haney struck out the Braves' Brandon Hollins to end the game.
The Patriots will continue the four game series against the Braves tomorrow with a double header. Game one on Friday is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
