Patriot's Soccer Prepares to Face Newman on Saturday

DALLAS – A pair of games conclude the Dallas Baptist Men's Soccer Team's season-long home stand beginning with a 5pm match on Saturday against Newman University. The Patriots have spent most of October in the home confines of Patriots Soccer Field, but have gone 1-3 on the current stretch. Two of three losses were decided by one goal.

LAST MATCH – DBU (4-8, 2-3) held tough against the second place team in the Heartland Conference Texas A&M International, but fell 4-1 after surrendering three goals in the second half. Junior David Balyeat scored his fourth goal of the season, moving him second on the team in scoring off a penalty kick. Mason Stringer grabbed five saves and allowed all four goals after making his second consecutive start.

STRINGER SEEING ACTION – After filling in for a few matches mid-way through the season, freshman Mason Stringer earned back-to-back starts last week for the Patriots. The rookie goalkeeper made his career debut against McMurry in Dallas and has made four starts since then.

He was busy in the net on Saturday in a 3-1 win over St. Mary's, facing 31 shots and grabbing a career best nine saves. The native from Burleson, Texas has a 2-2 record and has combined for 20 saves this year. Stringer's first start of his career landed the keeper's first win and only shutout so far in a 3-0 win at McMurry.

BARRIENTOS POSTS SEASON HIGH – Senior Rodrigo Barrientos stepped up big in the past two games, including a career performance in DBU's victory over St. Mary's last Saturday. The Carrollton, Texas, native scored two goals and added an assist to lift the Patriots in a 3-1 win. The match's outcome snapped a three-game losing streak. The midfielder's huge performance also gave him a personal best five points, matching a team-high accomplished by sophomore Brian Robertson twice previously in the year.

SCOUTING NEWMAN UNIVERSITY – Newman (1-12-1, 1-5) snapped a nine game losing streak, and gave the Jets their first victory of the season. Finally getting off the snide, NU pulled this win in dramatic fashion from a game-winning penalty kick, to top Texas-Permian Basin 3-2.

It was a 1-1 game at halftime, and then the Jets regained the advantage for the second time of the match in the 66th minute. Unable to hold off the Falcons, Zac Gramke put the Jets in front and en route to their big home win in the 80th minute.  Taylor Henry and Robert Butler also scored in the match for NU.

Steven Hamersky has seen the majority of action as the keeper for Newman this year and has allowed 25 goals and pulled in 57 saves.

Last season, DBU faced the Jets twice and tied on the road early in the season, before falling 1-0 at home. The lone goal of the game occurred with less than 15 minutes remaining, as the Patriots were outshot 12-7. Chuck Schober was the keeper that allowed the goal, but also registered three saves in a tight contest.
