Season Best Enough to Carry Patriots Over Rogers State

Box Score

DALLAS – The Dallas Baptist Men's Soccer Team concluded its six-game home stand posting a team season-high five goals to top Rogers State 5-2 on Monday. The Patriots (6-8, 4-3) have won back-to-back matches for the second time this season and finish the regular season 4-3 at Patriots Soccer Field.

Three first half goals propelled DBU in this contest. The first of the trio of scores came from freshman Brandon O'Donovan netting his first career at the 15:58 mark.

Classmate Seth Elliott scored in his second consecutive match to increase his total on the campaign to three. It also advanced the score 2-0 after 18:11 minutes.

Sophomore Cameron Gilbert concluded the first half scoring with a header for his second goal of the season that came from a corner kick by classmate Brian Robertson.

Even with a commanding 3-0 edge at halftime, RSU (5-9-1, 3-5) was only outshot 14-13 in the frame. The Hillcats cut into the deficit after DBU accidentally knocked in an own goal from a corner kick by Danko Kenjic.

Freshman Riley Alvey answered with his third goal of the year at the 60:13 mark to increase the lead 4-1. At this point DBU had matched its highest scoring total of the season.

After Niall Masterson cut the deficit in half 4-2 in the 71st minute off a long free kick that just beat the outstretched keeper Mason Stringer, the Patriots would break that previous team best.

Delivering the goal on the feat was the Patriot's leading scorer Robertson knocking in his seventh of the campaign. The Midlothian, Texas, native also continues setting an individual program best with the netter.

Stringer (3-2) notched a career-high 10 saves while facing 27 RSU shot attempts in a full match in the net. The freshman keeper allowed two goals, but also made several huge saves including back-to-back one timers in the 31st minute that could have shifted momentum of play.

"Today was a huge game for the guys, they started the game with the right tempo and came out strong," Head Coach Chris Crawford analyzed. "Guys were able to finish on chances, and took control of the match right away."

Mitchell Penton (1-6) allowed five goals and grabbed six saves in the loss.

Leading the Patriots offensively was junior David Balyeat with six shots. He did tally an assist along with Robertson and O'Donovan. Robertson followed with five attempts and held a game-high three shots on goal. Senior Rodrigo Barrientos, Gilbert, Elliott, and Alvey all added two shots in the victory.

Altogether DBU totaled 22 shots in the game and 11 shots on goal. The Hillcats outnumbered Dallas Baptist in both categories with 27 and 12, respectively. However, the Patriots prevailed on opportunities and the first half momentum was a difference maker.

Coach Crawford concluded, "I am proud of the guys for continuing to get better, and for their constant fight to the end of the buzzer. We are looking forward to our last two games of the season."

Dallas Baptist concludes its regular season with a pair of games on the road. First up on the slate is Saturday's contest at Lubbock Christian at 12 pm.
