OPENING TIP – The Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team 2013-2014 looks to bounce back after falling short 78-77 in a loss to East Texas Baptist University on Saturday. DBU (0-1) welcomes Dallas Christian to the Burg Center for a Wednesday night 7 pm tip-off.
LAST TIME OUT – The season didn't begin the way the Patriots anticipated dropping their home opener to ETBU. Still, a lot of positives came from the contest, as DBU searches for answers with the departure of graduate,
Nick Fox.
Sophomore
Jonathan Perry, last season's highest returning scorer with 11.2 points per game (ppg), delivered a game-high 28 in the defeat. He went perfect 15-for-15 at the free throw line and contributed to a squad that finished 17-19 at the charity stripe.
Also breaking double-digits in the scoring column for DBU was redshirt freshman
Myles Johnson with 15 points. Senior
Cory Carden added nine points and three assists.
The Patriots were outshot from the field at 37.5 percent to 43.1 percent by ETBU. However, the difference in the game came down to rebounding, as the Tigers won the battle 43-30 on the boards.
PLAYERS TO WATCH - Perry is the team's current leading scorer after posting 28 points in Saturday's season opener. The native of Kerrville, Texas scored 291 points and averaged 11.2 ppg to rank second on the team in his rookie campaign. Sophomore
Jason Gentry and Carden return and will be expected to provide steady contributions running the backcourt.
Carden's greatest strength is his three-point range, as the native of Clearwater, Florida demonstrated with a .474 field goal percentage behind the arc. Long-range shooting was a big strength for Dallas Baptist, as evident by being tops in the Heartland Conference last season at .404. The closest to matching in the league was Texas-Permian Basin with a .367 percentage. Gentry finished last year as the team leader in assists with 77 and ranked sixth in the conference with three assists per game.
Two other players that could make an impact weren't with DBU last season. Junior transfer
Chris Strong spent the past two season at Otero College, and is a former New Mexico Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior at El Dorado High School. Johnson, who scored 15 in collegiate debut, is another potential key performer that was redshirted his freshman year due to a knee injury.
SCOUTING DALLAS CHRISTIAN – The Crusaders (0-3) are also winless dropping their first three games on the campaign. DCC fell in its most recent contest 112-63 at Oklahoma Baptist University.
Leading the Crusaders in that loss was Marquis Love with 11 points. Following him was Chad Herring and Jonathan DeVaughn with nine and eight points, respectively. Dallas Christian shot 29 percent from the floor that night.
DCC is 0-2 on the road this year and is averaging 64.7 ppg this season.
Dallas Baptist last faced the Crusaders in 2010-11 season at the Burg Center and defeated them 88-77. The Patriots at one point led by as many as 53-35 early in the second half, but Dallas Christian rallied back and at one point only trailed by four.
None of the players on either teams' current rosters were on their respective squads that year.
COACH'S WORDS – Entering his eighth year at the helm for Dallas Baptist's Men's Basketball Team,
Blake Flickner is excited for another year.
"Besides the love of the game, the relationships built with players," Flickner answered when asked what his favorite part of coaching was. "It can be viewed as a ministry to shape lives of individuals both on and off the court and once beyond school."
UPCOMING SCHEDULE – The Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team embarks on its first road trip of the campaign. First stop is at East Central on Nov. 16 this Saturday at 4 PM. Following that game is another non-conference contest at Texas A&M-Commerce on Nov. 20.
