Box Score
A season-high eight game winning streak was ended on Saturday as the Dallas Baptist Women's Soccer Team fell 2-1 at St. Edward's University in the Heartland Tournament Championship. DBU (12-6-1) scored against the Hilltoppers after being blanked in the first two meetings, but it wasn't enough as the lights out defense got outdone. No. 13 St. Edward's (16-0-2) remains unblemished with its second Conference Tournament Title for the second time in the last three years.
One of SEU's best scorers got things rolling early on, Lauren Heller. The Hilltopper's team leader punched in her 10
th goal just one minute in the ballgame. Jessica Traves tallied the assist on the play.
The goal snapped an eight-game shutout streak for the Patriots, and also was the first goal allowed in 740 minutes. Both totals were program records.
Similar to the first two meetings in the regular season, DBU didn't have many opportunities in the first half. St. Edward's held a 6-2 shot advantage in the first half, and went into halftime with a 1-0 edge.
The Patriot's defense held the top 25 ranked team in the second half, limiting them to one shot attempt. Traves fired that attempt and netted the eventual game-winner in the 65
th minute. This gave SEU a commanding 2-0 lead at the time, but the Patriots had an answer.
All-Heartland Conference Offensive Player of the Year, senior
Danielle Presley brought the Patriots back in the match with a free kick beating the keeper right. The native of Flower Mound, Texas extended her team lead with 13 goals, and now has scored in the past three contests. The lone DBU score occurred at the 66:45 minute mark.
Junior
Lea Sedwick had the last shot of the game after that play, which resulted in a block at the 71:00 mark. The Kennedale, Texas, native led the Patriots offensively, notching the only multi-shot attempt in the contest for Dallas Baptist.
DBU was outshot seven-to-five as both squads again failed to break the double-digits in the shot column for the third meeting on the campaign.
"We did all we could today and it just wasn't our day," Head Coach
Michelle Lenard stated. "The team fought until the end and we had our chances, but just couldn't get the equalizer."
St. Edward's had its keeper duo combo working each half in the goal. Danielle Licarione (12-0-1) started the first half and faced two shots earning the win. Lorrie Santoy took over action in the net for the second half, recording a goal and save apiece.
Junior
Kerry Edwards (12-6-1) surrendered two goals and grabbed a pair of saves in the loss.
The sixth year Head Coach got everything from her team in another close match-up with the rival program. "I'm proud of the effort from the girls today and couldn't ask for much more," Lenard concluded.
