THE RUNDOWN"Senior Night" was bitter sweet for the DBU Volleyball team as they honored seniors'
Krystal Wunderlich,
Erika Papadeas,
Tiara Gipson,
Markayla Benoit and
Sarah Black, but were unable to get the win as they fell in five sets to St. Edward's University. Despite the loss the Lady Patriots had various match high leaders including
Brooke Manley with 16 kills,
Kaycie Bird with 47 assists, and
Tadam Mergener with 34 digs.
Opening the first set of the night DBU and SEU would tie early on at, 3-3. That is until the Lady Patriots would go on to score six straight points to take the lead, 9-6. As the set went on the Hilltoppers would come back to tie the set at 13, but multiple three point runs would erase the tie and put DBU ahead to where they would control the lead winning the set, 25-22.
In the second set SEU would maintain a lead early and build a 12-8 advantage against DBU. The Lady Patriots would respond to the Hilltoppers by scoring 10 of the next 11 points taking the lead, 18-13. The offensive explosion would be enough to keep DBU in front taking a 2-0Â set lead winning, 25-22.
Tied at four early in the third set, the Hilltoppers would score four straight points against the Lady Patriots to take a, 7-4 lead. This would be enough cushion for SEU to keep DBU at bay throughout the set winning, 25-19. Continuing the momentum from the third set, SEU would go on to win the fourth set as well, 25-21 tying the match up 2-2.
In the fourth and final deciding set of the night SEU would jump out to a, 3-1 lead to put DBU behind early. The two squads would trade points as the set went on, but the early advantage by the Hilltoppers would be too much for the Lady Patriots to recover from. SEU would win the final set 15-10 closing out the match.
