THE RUNDOWNAn incredible defensive performance and a timely goal from sophomore
Riley Alvey resulted in the Dallas Baptist Men's Soccer Team completing Monday night's match versus No. 18 Midwestern State University in a 1-1 draw.
Â
DBU (3-6-1) moves to 2-0-1 in overtime affairs, and held tough against a Midwestern State (7-1-1) squad that boasted a 25-15 shot advantage.
Â
Junior
Chuck Schober (1-3) made his first appearance and start at Patriot Soccer Field, demonstrated an outstanding performance, turning away a season-high 11 saves in the net for DBU.
Â
The native of McKinney, Texas, allowed one goal while facing 25 shots, 12 that were placed on the target. Schober also did an amazing job preventing other shot attempts from materializing, by swatting several balls outside of the box through 110 minutes of action.
Â
Leading the DBU offense senior
David Balyeat with a team-best, four shots. Alvey was second adding three attempts, two on goal; while a trio of players attempted a pair each. Featured in this unit include: juniors
Leevi Schwartz,
Cameron Gilbert, and freshman
Nathan McBride.
Â
Despite allowing double-digits in shot attempts to the visiting Mustangs, Dallas Baptist outshot its opposition in extra frames, combining for a six to four comparison. This included four tries in the final overtime half for the home squad. Â
Â
HIGHLIGHTS The momentum was on MSU's side early, as the nationally ranked foe controlled possession and had a few quality opportunities to pressure the Patriots' defense. However, it wouldn't be until near the end of the first half, that Kyle Baccus fired a laser nearly 30 yards out that scooted past a diving keeper.
Â
The Mustangs 1-0 edge carried into the break, with DBU competing to stay within a close margin.
Â
It nipped that deficit at the 71:19 minute mark as Alvey punched his team-best, fourth goal on the campaign. The netter also sets a new career-high for the Hideaway, Texas, native. Â Â Â
Â
Defense remained the focus of this contest, Schober amassed seven saves in the second stanza. A quartet of those happened within the opening two minutes of the half. The last shot of the half was nabbed for a save by DBU's keeper at the 77:57 mark.
Â
The home squad took the final three shots of regulation, but junior
Jay Adam Williams, Balyeat, and Gilbert misfired in the last three minutes with a shot high, saved, and guided wide, respectively.
Â
Neither team managed to resolve the deadlock in the first overtime half, and three Midwestern State saves in the final extended time left Monday's results as a stalemate.
The final play of the match involved the Mustangs' Albert Rodriguez kicking a golden-goal opportunity, but Schober's quick reaction arrived just in time as his hands deflected the ball away with less than a minute remaining to help secure a tie.
