THE LEADThe Dallas Baptist Women's Soccer Team begins the Heartland Conference Tournament with a first round match-up featuring Texas A&M International University. The semifinal contest is slated for 2:30 PM, and will be hosted at St. Edward's University.
Â
DBU has been rolling lately, in the midst of an active season-long, nine-match winning streak. The torrid span began on a seven-game road stint, and has continued as the Patriots moved to 10 over .500; their highest winning percentage of the campaign.
Â
The No.2–seed squad has also prevailed in seven conference affairs, all coming in a row since dropping the league opener versus St. Edward's in a 1-0 double overtime setback.
The Patriots have been successful in the Heartland Tournament, winning it in 2012 and qualifying for the championship match the past three years.
Â
LAST TIME OUTDBU closed out the regular season with a 3-2 victory on Monday versus Lubbock Christian University. The team finished 4-2 at Patriot Soccer Field, with both setbacks occurring in overtime.
Â
The Patriots took advantage of an early goal moments after kickoff, as juniorÂ
Ashley Cox got by the keeper on the outer left portion of the box and finished the open netter. Shortly after the home squad doubled its edge in the 24
th minute after fellow classmateÂ
Emilie MacDonald reclaimed the team-lead in scoring with goal number nine.
Â
Lubbock Christian would not go quietly, with Claudia Sanchez earning her 13
th scoring result at the 23:05 mark. It was a finisher off a previous shot by Brooke Wendl that rocketed off the crossbar and just missed.
Â
DBU added to the edge in the second half, but the Lady Chaps countered with a goal and narrowed the match to 3-2. SeniorÂ
Lea Sedwick notched her fourth netter of the year, completing a header from Cox on the left side.
Â
The Patriots posted a couple more shots than LCU, reflecting a 16-14 difference. Weather was a factor in this one, as increasing winds in the second frame made it difficult at times for both squads.
Â
JuniorÂ
Lindsey Eccles paced the squad with five shot attempts, and placed two on goal, and Cox was right behind displaying four. Three of her efforts reached the target, giving her a .750 percentage.
Â
CATEGORY LEADERS MacDonald and
Ashley Cox continue to guide the Patriots' scoring totals combining for 17 this season. MacDonald watched Cox match her in the goals category on Monday, but quickly resumed position at the top with her ninth.
Â
The Cedar Hill, Texas, native boasts a career-best to go along with six assists for 24 points. She boasts 12 points in the past four matches.
Â
Cox remains a force as the forward increased her numbers to eight goals, seven assists, and 23 points entering the league tournament. She has mustered at least a point in nine of the past 11 contests, and seven have been at least two, with the latest affair marking a season-high at four. Â
Â
The Midlothian, Texas, native also is atop of the shot and shots on goal categories with 68 and 26, respectively.
Â
Junior
Jolee Patterson ranks third on the team with five goals on the season. Her scoring result on Saturday against Texas-Permian Basin was her fourth in a conference affair, and ranks second behind MacDonald. The native of Royse City, Texas continues to bolster a career-best after surpassing the previous total of two in 2013.
                                                                Â
Sedwick broke into double figures on points with 11, to tie Patterson for third on the squad. The senior headed her fourth goal of the season, but she has been influential in other aspects of the game, posting three assists to rank third, and has notched 12 shots on goal out of 23 attempts.
