DBU Explodes in Game 1 Win

Box Score

Competing in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader at Horner Ballpark, the DBU Patriot Baseball team cruised to a 19-2 win over visiting University of Pennsylvania. The Patriots scored in six consecutive innings, the second to the seventh, on their way to their eighth win against just two losses.

The Patriots jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring a trio of runs in the bottom of the second inning, with run-scoring hits coming from KJ Alexander and Nash Knight. The third run came when Knight moved from first to third on a hit-and-run single from David Martinelli, scoring when Penn left fielder Rick Brebner couldn't get a handle on Martinelli's hit.

The Quakers countered with a single run in the top of the third, coming courtesy of a solo home run from Ryan Mincher. The Patriots quickly responded, scoring three in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a monster two-run home run from Austin Listi over the left field wall.

After a perfect top of the fourth for DBU starter Cy Sneed, the Patriots tallied three more runs on a double by Daniel Salters, a groundout by Justin Wall, and a single by KJ Alexander, all scoring single runs. Penn countered with a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Brandon Engelhardt.

The Patriots opened things up beginning in the fifth, scoring a single run, followed by five in the sixth, and four in the seventh, running the score to the eventual final of 19-2.

Alexander and Trevin Sonnier led seven players with multiple hits, totaling 18 for the DBU club. Alexander totaled three RBI and three runs scored, with Sonnier knocking in a game-high four runs. Knight also knocked in three runs, scoring twice. Salters scored four times with a pair of hits and a pair of walks, with Listi adding two RBI and three runs scored.

Cy Sneed (2-1) started and worked six innings, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out five and walking two. Sean Stutzman received the save, working three scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits.

"Cy (Sneed) was really big for us," said DBU Head Coach Dan Heefner. "As much as (Josh) Urban and (Joseph) Shaw threw Tuesday (at UTSA), we needed to get through this game. So for Cy to throw six innings, and Stutzman to throw three puts us in good shape for this last game."

For Penn (0-2), Austin Bossart led the way with a pair of hits, with Engelhardt and Mincher each earning one hit and one RBI. Mincher was joined by Marshall Harden, scoring one run each. Dan Gautieri (0-1) worked two innings, allowing six runs on seven hits.
