The Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team continued their recent hot surge with an 87-75 win over Oklahoma Christian in the Quarterfinals of the NCCAA Regional Tournament in Edmond, Oklahoma, on Thursday night. Four Patriots scored in double-figures, led by redshirt-sophomore,
Jonathan Perry's 21 point performance. The win marks the eighth victory in the last 11 games for DBU (14-13) and earns the Patriots a date with No. 1 seed, Southern Nazarene University, tomorrow night at 7:30.
In a first half in which neither team took a lead larger than three points in the first 14 minutes of action, DBU went up by four when Perry knocked down a jumper in the paint with six minutes until the half. The Patriots opened up their largest lead of the half at seven following a three-point shot by
Charles Allen.Â
Leading 36-31 through the first 20 minutes, DBU led from wire-to-wire in the second half. OCU (10-17) trimmed the Patriot lead to two with just under 14 minutes to play, but never came any closer.Â
Jason Gentry's shot from beyond the arc at the 4:23 mark gave DBU a double-digit lead for the first time.Â
The Eagles would make one last run at the Patriots going on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to three points with 3:08 left on the clock. Over the final three minutes, DBU finished off Oklahoma Christian, outscoring the Eagles 13-4 the rest of the way.
Joining Perry in double-digits, was Allen with 18,
Myles Johnson with 17, and Gentry chipped in 11. Offensively, the Patriots shot 55 percent from the field and drained 15-of-27 shots from three-point range. On the defensive end, DBU limited OCU to 39 percent shooting from the field and out-rebounded the Eagles 34-28.Â
"We had a great team effort tonight," DBU Head Coach,
Blake Flickner said following the win. "We played well in all three phases of the game, offensively , defensively, and rebounding and were able to overcome some foul trouble and found a way to grind it out. I especially loved the way we moved the ball unselfishly as demonstrated by our 20 assists on 26 made baskets."
With the win, DBU advances to the Semifinals of the NCCAA Regional Tournament where they will face No. 1 seed, Southern Nazarene University. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
