Box Score The Dallas Baptist Baseball Team took game one of a Saturday afternoon double-header, 6-3, over the Baylor Bears. With the win, DBU (25-19) takes the series over the Baylor and will look for the sweep in game two of the twin-bill later this evening.
The Patriots jumped out early, scoring two runs in the first inning off of Baylor (15-19) starter, Austin Stone. With runners at first and second and one out, an infield single off the bat of
Daniel Salters hit to the shortstop Brett Doe resulted in an errant thrown third that skipped towards the third base dugout, allowing
Drew Turbin to score.
Justin Wall followed with a ground out to the left side that plated
Mike Wesolowski with the Patriots' second run of the inning.
DBU tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth when
Drew Turbin blasted a pitch over the center field wall for a three-run homerun. The round-tripper was the second of the season for Turbin and extended DBU's lead to 5-0.
Patriot starter,
Cy Sneed, kept Baylor scoreless through four innings, before allowing three runs in the bottom of the fifth, drawing the Bears to within two, 5-3.
Holding on to a two-run advantage and one out in the bottom of the seventh,
Brandon Koch came out of the pen in relief of Sneed to inherit a 1-2 count on the Bears' West Tunnell. Koch proceeded to finish off the strikeout of Tunnell and followed with a punch-out of Logan Brown to get out of the inning unscathed.
In the top of the eighth, DBU's
KJ Alexander sent a Doug Ashby pitch over the left field wall for his second home run of the series, giving the Patriots a 6-3 lead.
Koch would come on in the ninth to retire the Bears in order by striking out the side. Earning his team-leading fifth save of the year, Koch worked 2.2 innings, matching a career-high with six strikeouts.
DBU and Baylor will meet in the nightcap of the double-header at 7:05 pm.
Cory Taylor (2-1) is scheduled to start the series finale for the Patriots.
