BACK ON THE PITCHThe Dallas Baptist Women's Soccer Team kicks off its home opener for the first time since the completion of the new Sedwick Soccer Fieldhouse. Colorado Mesa is the first opponent for the Patriots (0-1-1), who are still seeking their first victory of the campaign. Â
Â
A strong competitive slate continues for the Patriots, with five of the first eight contests versus top-25 nationally ranked preseason programs. So far DBU has tied 1-1 versus No. 9 ranked Colorado School of Mines and fell 2-1 at No. 16 Metro State University. Â
Â
MOST RECENT ACTIONIn Saturday's setback, it was a quick start for both teams, with juniorÂ
Jolee Patterson striking in the lone DBU goal of the match at the 6:45 mark. The native of Royse City, Texas, adds to her career list of scores with three, and eclipses the 10-point mark. Patterson's netter was belted from 35 yards out to beat the keeper from MSU.
Â
With still under 10 minutes into regulation, the Roadrunners answered with a goal from Tess Hagenlock. She would boast a game-high, three points, after her assist in the final frame helped lift the nationally ranked foe. Brandi Farley's goal in the second half was the difference maker in a tightly contested affair.
Â
Despite the Patriots outshooting the home squad, 17-15, they were unable to find the back of the net besides Patterson's goal. DBU also collected eight shots on goal compared to the Roadrunners' six.
Â
PLAYERS TO WATCHSenior
Kerry Edwards continues to add to an already spectacular job her entire career at goalkeeper for Dallas Baptist. The McKinney, Texas, native has amassed 200 minutes through a pair of games, while pulling in 11 saves total against 34 shots faced.
Â
Prior to the current season, the four-year starting goalkeeper played in 69 games, including a career-high, 25, last year. She owns a 45-15-1 record overall and set career marks in minutes played (2,270:30) and shut outs (16) in 2013.
Â
Sedwick notched the 30-goal career mark off a penalty kick in the season opener at No.9 Colorado School of Mines. It held up as the only necessary score to force a tie in the difficult match-up. The senior midfielder is also 28 points away from 100.
Â
Juniors
Ashley Cox and
Emilie MacDonald lead the squad in shots with five and four, respectively. Cox also has a team-high, three shots on goal.
Â
HOME SWEET HOME DBU returns home for the first time this season, and will look to build on its recent fortunes at the friendly confines. The Patriots collected a 7-2 record last season, and have compiled a 22-6-1 showing the past three years.
Â
This year the Women's Soccer Team only plays at Patriot Soccer Field six times. The longest stretch is the current three-game home stand. That could change if DBU finishes first in the Heartland Conference Standings and hosts the league tournament in November. Â
Â
SCOUTING COLORADO MESA The Mavericks enter the contest with an identical record as DBU, after a challenging weekend in Durango, Colorado. CMU (0-1-1) tied Midwestern State University 2-2 in its opener last Thursday, before dropping a 2-0 decision on Saturday to Texas Women's University.
Â
Sarah Pope and Darion Wiegert scored in the knotted affair, leading the squad with one goal apiece. Marie Dreher and Haley Glassy tallied an assist to give them a point into the young season. Both of Midwestern State's goals occurred in the first half, creating a 2-1 deficit for the home at intermission.
Â
At the 79:05 minute mark, Wiegert blasted a 20-yard shot that snuck in the top center of the goal and forced a double overtime tie.
Â
Goalkeeper Sarah Schnetzler has worked the net in both games for the Mavericks and combined for six saves and 23 shots faced. CMU has been attacking thus far, creating a 41-23 shot edge for the Patriots' opposition through two matches.
Â
SERIES HISTORYThursday marks the first meeting between the programs in the past 10 years. It could possibly be the first time these squads take to the pitch against each other in history.
Â
UP NEXTDallas Baptist continues a season-long, three-game home stand with Fort Lewis College on Saturday. The match is slated for 2:30 PM. DBU concludes the span on September 16 versus Texas A&M University-Commerce. Â Â
