MULTIMEDIA COVERAGE Video: West Texas A&M BroadcastLivestats: WT LivestatsFacebook: DBU Athletics THE LEADThe Dallas Baptist Women's Soccer Team heads on a two-game road trip beginning September 20 at West Texas A&M University. Kickoff is slated to begin at 12 PM.
After playing three matches in six days at home, DBU (2-2-1) will have a stretch of time off, taking to the pitch six days after Saturday's contest. Following that, it will be seven days before the next time the Patriots get on the field.
All five affairs the Women's Soccer Team has been involved in have been low scoring, as the squad has allowed five combined goals to the opposition overall. DBU has tallied no more than two goals thus far, and has totaled six altogether.
The Patriots have been involved in three overtime affairs already, matching last season's total.
MOST RECENT ACTIONA season-high 36 shot attempts wasn't enough for DBU to complete a three-game home winning streak, as Texas A&M-Commerce University prevailed 2-1 in overtime. It was back-to-back games that required extra frames to decide a deadlocked contest.
The Patriots are 1-1-1 in a trio of affairs. A pair of those matches have gone into a second overtime.
DBU poured on a team-high 15 shots in the first half and matched a team-best, three shots on goal, in the first 15 minutes of a match. It wasn't until just under a minute, that junior
Emilie MacDonald slipped a netter to knot the game dramatically.
However, a corner kick in 103
rd minute by the Lion's Jade Bell would find the goal off the golden foot of Vicky Back to secure the match for the visitors.
Redshirt Junior
Dixie Kurrus recorded a career-high eight shots in the contest. Nine Patriot players tallied multi-shot games, with senior
Lea Sedwick and Kurrus matching game-highs three shots on goal. 14 attempts by the home squad would be placed on the target, marking another high on the campaign.
PLAYERS TO WATCHTwo Patriots have posted multiple goals on the season, with
Ashley Cox and MacDonald tying a team-best, two apiece. All their goals have come in the friendly confines, and Cox has placed four of seven shots on goal there.
The team enjoyed many shot attempts, combining for 85 on the home stand, and have broken the 100-mark with 110 through five matches this season. Five players have reached double figures in shot attempts.
Ashely Cox paces the group with 23 total, while a trio of women soccer players are tied with 15. Amongst that group include: MacDonald, Sedwick, and Kurrus. Junior
Lindsey Eccles rounds out the group with 10, and right behind her close to notching the feat is freshman
Emma Durain with nine.
Sedwick leads the squad with eight shots on goal, just ahead of Cox. Kurrus had a strong home stretch, placing half of her season-total for shots on target in the last match. The Argyle, Texas, native, tallied five during the span of home games.
Edwards expects to suit up for the 75
th collegiate match in the goalkeeper's career. On the campaign, the McKinney, Texas, native recorded 23 saves and allowed five goals. Thus far, the goalie has played a career-long in five games, 484:21 minutes, working all of them in the net for a team that has gone beyond regulation three times.
COX DUO RECEIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORSDallas Baptist made a clean sweep of both the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week in the Heartland Conference, with
Ashley Cox and senior
Jake Cox earning the respective accolades.
Ashley Cox had an excellent week, firing 18 shots and connecting on a game-winning goal over Fort Lewis College on September 13. The golden goal was the only score in an overtime victory for the Patriots. Two days prior, the forward helped secure a 2-0 win in the team's home-opener and first victory of the campaign.
On the defensive side,
Jake Cox helped anchor a defense that held opponents scoreless in two matches (one in overtime) last week. Even in the team's 2-1 setback against Texas A&M-Commerce, Cox limited the pressure on Edwards and kept the squad in the match.
The native of McKinney, Texas, played all 285 minutes in three games last week, helping hold opponents to two goals. This week's honor also marks the first time in her four-year career that Cox has been named Defensive Player of the Week honors.
SCOUTING WEST TEXAS A&MThe Lady Buffs (2-3) won their second-straight contest on Thursday, topping Wayland Baptist 4-0. It marks consecutive matches where WTAMU shut out the opposition at home by the same score.
An even more bizarre statistic West Texas A&M is in a trio of road games, the team was defeated in all of them by a 2-0 result.
Emily Krenek boasts a team-high three goals and six points. Rhea Belgrave is right behind her with four points thanks to a pair of goals. Both were factors in the team's latest triumph.
Karyn Forbes has not recorded a goal yet, but does rank third in points with three, picking them all up on assists.
Krenek also is leading the team with shots on goal percentage, going five-for-seven to equal .714. Haley Girard is tied with a team-high, eight shots, putting five on target for a .625 percentage.
McKynzie Zick has received all five starts, and through 450 minutes has allowed six goals and nabbed 14 saves.
SERIES HISTORYSaturday marks the sixth straight year the programs have been scheduled to meet on the pitch. DBU owns a 3-1 record during the span, with the first scheduled match cancelled in 2009. All four contests completed have been determined by one goal. The Patriots have won the last three years.
In the most recent contest at Patriot Soccer Field in 2013, DBU triumphed in overtime off a game-winner from current junior
Lindsey Eccles. The netter occurred at the 93:13 mark. A 24-2 shooting edge reflected in the box score, with
Ashley Cox posting four shots to lead active returners.
The Patriots have split the pair of games in Canyon, Texas, with both final results displaying 2-1. Each winner in its respective year was a top 25 nationally ranked squad. In 2011 the No. 9 Dallas Baptist Women's Soccer Team prevailed off goals from departed senior
Courtney Baxter and Sedwick.
Edwards held the Lady Buffs to a single goal, facing nine shots total and recording five saves.
UPCOMING SCHEDULEDallas Baptist continues its brief road stretch next week against Heartland Conference opponent St. Edward's University on September 26. The affair is a non-conference match-up and begins at 4 PM.
The two squads battle about a week later on October 4 at Patriot Soccer Field to open league action.
