Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Ashley Cox Provides Difference in Thriller

GAME SUMMARY
The Dallas Baptist Women's Soccer Team mustered one extra shot than its opponent, and that was enough to count for the game-winner in a 1-0 result at St. Edward's University on Friday evening.

Junior Ashley Cox punched the difference-making score off a nice pass from the middle of the box by senior Lea Sedwick. The team's leading scorer completed the sequence at the 52:09 minute mark by placing the ball in the far corner of the net.

Besides that, neither team got much momentum in this one, as the squads combined for fewer than 10 shots in the entire contest. The Patriots (4-2-1) led the way with a 5-4 edge. Last season, all three affairs resulted in neither team breaking the double-digit point in shot attempts.

DBU's last win over the Hilltoppers (4-3) occurred in the Heartland Conference Tournament finals in 2012. The Patriots are now 3-2 in matches determined by a goal or less.

HIGHLIGHTS
It was a back-and-forth match in the opening half, with both teams exchanging shooting opportunities to tie with two apiece going into the break.

Corner kicks weren't a factor, despite DBU getting four efforts and St. Edward's garnering a trio. The home team would boast another three in the second half to hold a 6-5 showing in that category.

Early in the final frame, Ashley Cox would be the hero in this one on offense, piling her third goal of the campaign off a nice assist from Sedwick. The Midlothian, Texas, native has scored two game-winners this year, and helped the team go 3-0 in contests she has found a netter in.

Of the five total shots, Cox paced things being the only member on the team with a multi-shot game. Her scoring resulted in the only shot on goal as well.

Also recording shots in the victory were juniors Lindsey Eccles, Emilie MacDonald, and redshirt junior Dixie Kurrus. The trio has now taken at least one attempt in all seven matches on the season.

Credited with the win and fourth shutout of the year is senior Kerry Edward's (4-2-1). While she didn't tally an assist, the McKinney, Texas, native helped maintain control in the back field to hold SEU to four shots.

Edward's now boasts 49 wins through 76 games played in the keeper's career. After blanking consecutive opponents, DBU has kept opponents scoreless through 180 minutes.

TOP QUOTE
"We always know going to play at St. Edward's to expect a battle and it certainly was today. We did well enough to go into halftime with a tie, but didn't feel like we really settled into our rhythm in the first half. After some adjustments at halftime, I felt we raised our level in the second half and had a little more of the run of play. Finally, there was some great team play to create the scoring chance and a fantastic finish by Ashley Cox. The team is very happy with the result today and feels we continue to make progress." –Women's Soccer Head Coach Michelle Lenard.
