Myles Johnson and
Shannon Lilly led the charge for DBU, each scoring 21 points on the night for the Patriots.
With the No. 15 Hilltoppers controlling much of the first half, the Patriots would finally take their first lead of the game, 17-15 with 8:44 remaining. DBU would continue to strengthen their lead as they went up by as many as four points during the half. As the first half continued, St. Edward's would respond to take a 31-29 lead before going into intermission, but a tip in in the final seconds of the half by Patriot freshman,
Jordan Gosey, would tie the two squads at 31 apiece. Gosey would end up leading the Patriots with seven rebounds.
The tightly contested outing would continue for both teams into the second half. While DBU maintained the lead for much of the second, going up by as many as five points, St. Edward's would not go away quietly. With the Patriots up 66-63 and 1:59 remaining, a three pointer by St. Edward's John Gramlich tied the game. Gramlich would end the night with a game high 22 points. After both teams exchanged free throws to knot the game at 67, an and-one lay up by Trey Lindsey would give the Hilltoppers a 70-67 lead.
With :19 left in regulation,
Myles Johnson would bring DBU to within one point with a layup to bring the score to 70-69. Points from the charity stripe by St. Edward's extended the Hilltoppers lead to 71-69. A foul on
Shannon Lilly in the final seconds of regulation would put the game into overtime, as thejunior guard would drain both shots from the free throw line to end the second half tied at 71.
In the extra period, two big three pointers and 15 made free throws by St. Edward's would give them to an, 80-75 advantage. Despite the valiant effort by the Patriots, they would ultimately fall to the Hilltoppers, 92-85.
