DBU Edged in Five Set Thriller by Angelo State

THE LEAD
Down 0-2 in the match, the Dallas Baptist Volleyball Team fought back for a fifth set where they fell to the Angelo State Belles, 3-2. Sidnee Jo Fitzpatrick and Madeline Dolberry led DBU with 15 kills each, while Kaycie Bird registered 29 assist, and Lauren Nicks turned in a match high 32 digs.

In the first set, ASU jumped out to an early 8-4 advantage, which would lead to DBU playing catch up for the rest of the set. Despite the deficit and trailing the majority of play, the Lady Patriots would stay close and eventually even the score at 23 after a Darian Stuckly kill. DBU's comeback efforts would fall in the first set as ASU won 25-23, going up 1-0 in the match.

The two squads traded leads early in the second set. With the score tied at 6, the Lady Patriots would go on a 3-1 run behind scores from Madeline Dolberry and Carly Hess to take a 9-7 lead. The Belles countered with a run of their own scoring nine of the next 11 points to go ahead 16-11. DBU wouldn't lead again during the set only scoring twice more as ASU continued momentum to close the second set 25-18, and take a 2-0 match edge.

Starting off with a kill by Brooke Manley, the Lady Patriots opened up the third set with a big 10-1 run against the Belles. After ASU registered their second point of the set, DBU answered with four more scores to push their lead to 14-2. The third set would be smooth sailing for the Lady Patriots winning 25-14, trailing 2-1 in the match.

Taking advantage of DBU errors, ASU took an early 4-1 lead to open the fourth set. That would change later on as the Lady Patriots stayed on the Belle's heels to tie the game at 15 behind Sidnee Jo Fitzpatrick kills and eventually take the lead 18-16. As the set progressed ASU tied the match 22-22, before another Fitzpatrick kill sparked a DBU rally scoring three of the last four points clinching the fourth set 25-23, tying the match 2-2.

DBU took control early in the fifth set taking a 5-2 lead, before ASU scored three straight points to tie the set 5-5. The teams exchanged leads and with the score tied 8-8, ASU started to pulled away with a 4-1 run to take a 12-9 lead. The Lady Patriots closed in on the Belles down only one score 13-12, but ASU finished out the fourth set posting the final two points 15-12, winning the set and the match 3-2.
