DBU Wins in Four Sets Over Midwestern State

THE LEAD
The Dallas Baptist Volleyball Team defeated the Midwestern State Mustangs in four sets, 3-1. The Lady Patriots had a trio of match highs starting with Carly Hess who had 13 kills, Kaycie Bird with 32 assists, and Lauren Nicks with 23 digs.

In the first set of the afternoon, leads would be short lived for each team as they traded points all the way through mid-set. With the score tied 11-11, DBU made a break scoring four of the next five points to take a 15-12 lead. Dallas Baptist would hold the advantage late into the set, until Midwestern State was able to tie the match and go ahead 23-22. DBU responded to MSU by scoring the final three points to win the set, 25-23 and go up 1-0 in the match.

The Lady Patriots were in the driver's seat for the entire second set never allowing the Mustangs a chance to lead. MSU tied up the match 16-16, but that would be the last time they would pull this close to DBU. A drive sparked by a kill by Brooke Manley would open the flood gates for the Lady Patriots as they cruised to a 25-21 win to go up 2-1 in the set.

MSU started the third set strong, jumping out to 6-1 lead over DBU. An early lead along with multiple point streaks would give the Mustangs their only win over the Lady Patriots, 25-16.

In the fourth and final set, Dallas Baptist and Midwestern State would tie the match 11 times with five lead changes. With both squads knotted at 20-20 late in the set, a block by Carly Hess and Madeline Dolberry along with a service ace by Lauren Nicks helped DBU pull away going up 23-20. The Mustangs responded with two points of their own to bring the match to 23-22. Led by a Hess kill, Dallas Baptist would wrap up the set scoring the final two points to win the set 25-22,

COACH'S QUOTE
"I am proud of the girls for pulling wins out lately. We are still dealing with injuries and position changes and that's a lot to ask of them. We're working out some kinks, but our focus is to be the hardest working and defensive team on the court. That works for us and we will continue to make that our focus." - Coach Cathy Kokel
