DBU Stops UT-Permian Basin in Four Sets

THE LEAD
The Dallas Baptist Volleyball Team won in four sets as they defeated, the University of Texas-Permian Basin Falcons, 3-1. Brooke Manley and Lauren Nicks had match highs with 14 kills and 20 digs, respectively, while Hannah Hester registered 19 assists.

As both teams felt each other out early in the first set, DBU would make the first move to gain an advantage. With the score tied 4-4, a kill by Madeline Dolberry opened up a three point streak to give the Lady Patriots a 7-4 lead. DBU opened up the lead even more as points from Brooke Manley and Cooper Martin put DBU up 11-5. As the set continued UTPB chipped away at DBU's lead, enough so to tie the set 18-18. Despite the comeback, multiple errors would be the downfall for the Falcons. Led by Jenna Elkins four kills, the Lady Patriots claimed the first set 25-19, going up 1-0 in the match.

The Lady Patriots would put on a dominate showing early in the second set going up by as much as ten points with the score 17-7. It would soon become a memory as UT-Permian Basin engineered a comeback putting together big scoring runs to get ahead. Hitting .206 in the second, UTPB scored the final six points in the set to win in extra points, 26-24 to tie the match 1-1.

The third set would begin to look a lot like the second set, with the Lady Patriots surrendering a big lead at 19-11 to have UTPB score seven straight points to trail DBU by only one point, 19-18. Back to back kills by Carly Hess and Sidnee Jo Fitzpatrick would slow the Falcons momentum, but UTPB would respond with two points of their own to remain down, 21-20. Another kill by Hess would put DBU up 22-20 with UT-Permian Basin once again responding with two more points knotting the set at 22-22. With the score tied the Lady Patriots would take advantage of a late Falcon's service error, which would lead to two kills from Manley scoring the final two points of the set. DBU sealed the third set 25-22 going up 2-1 in the match.

UTPB would once again look to play from behind as DBU continued their momentum from the following set creating an 18-10 margin, with Hess scoring five of her ten kills during the set. Looking to ground the feisty Falcons, a kill by Manley would be the start to send UTPB home. Scoring three of the final five points Fitzpatrick's game winning kill ended the set, 25-21 with the Lady Patriots winning the match, 3-1.

COACH'S QUOTE
"Defense is going to win, that is something we've been focusing on. Our hitters came alive and with Jenna back that helped a lot offensively. If we stay in system we've got some good hitters to put the ball down." - Coach Cathy Kokel
