DBU Stuns Newman in Four Sets on Senior Day

THE LEAD
On "Senior Day", the Dallas Baptist Volleyball Team honored the accomplishments of seniors, Tadam Mergener and Kaycie Bird as they defeated the second place Heartland Conference team, the Newman University Jets in four sets, 3-1. Brooke Manley had 14 kills for the Lady Patriots, with Kaycie Bird dishing out 29 assists, and Lauren Nicks registering a match high 33 digs.

Kills by Madeline Dolberry would give DBU and early 3-2 lead in the first set. Both the Lady Patriots and Jets would play each other close in the set not allowing the other to get more than a two point lead, until DBU was able to take advantage of NU errors and use a Jenna Elkins kill to pull away going ahead 23-19 and ultimately taking the first set 25-19, to go up 1-0 in the match.

The Jets engineered a 5-1 lead in the second set to gain momentum against the Lady Patriots. Offense would keep rolling for NU as they went up by as much as nine points with a 18-9 lead late in the set. The Lady Patriots would fall to the Jets in the second set 25-19, tying the set 1-1.

Bouncing back in the third set, DBU took a 6-3 lead which opened the door for even more scoring, notching nine of the next 14 points to take a staggering 15-8 lead. Taking advantage of multiple point streaks DBU claimed the third set 25-17, taking a 2-1 match lead.

Looking to close out the match, the Lady Patriots made a dominating run in the fourth set jumping out to a 7-2 lead. DBU would continue scoring at a high level going on a 11-8 run to take a 18-8 lead. The Lady Patriots would go up by as much as ten points taking the fourth set 25-15 and claiming the match. 3-1.

COACH'S QUOTE
"The team executed things we've been working on. We were able to stay in system and have all six hitters hitting and being aggressive. We're playing defense at a high level with Lauren leading it is amazing. Hopefully it is all coming together and we can stick to that." - Coach Cathy Kokel
