Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to UT-Permian Basin

THE LEAD
The Dallas Baptist Volleyball Team was defeated in five sets, 3-2 by the University of Texas-Permian Basin Falcons on Thursday night. Carly Hess had a match-high 20 kills, Kaycie Bird chipped in 30 assists, and Hannah Hester tallied a match-high 12 digs.

Building a 6-3 lead in the first set, the Falcons would take an early advantage, before a 7-4 rally by the Lady Patriots powered by a string of kills by Carly Hess tied the set at 10 apiece. The tie was short lived though, as UTPB scored the next three points to take a 13-10 lead.  The Faclons would eventually win the first set 25-16 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

DBU fell behind in the second set, as UTPB went up early by a score of 6-1.  Despite trailing, the Lady Patriots would stay close with multiple point streaks including a three-point run capped off by a Hess kill that narrowed the deficit to 11-10.  After DBU tied the match at 13 apiece, UTPB took the upper hand and pulled away on a 7-1 run to go up 20-14.  UT-Permian Basin would go on to close out DBU, 25-19 and take a 2-0 match lead.

Down 10-7 to the Falcons in the third set, the Lady Patriots turned on the offense, starting with back-to-back kills from Cooper Martin that opened a five-point run to put DBU ahead 12-10. UTPB pulled within one point 12-11, before the Lady Patriots went on another scoring wave that extended their lead to 19-13.  DBU would be too much for UT-Permian Basin in the third set as they won 25-17.

Carrying their momentum into the fourth set, the Lady Patriots jumped out in front of the Falcons, 5-1. Trying to close in on DBU, UTPB pulled to within one point at 11-10, but that would be as close as they would get for the rest of the set.  The Lady Patriots went up by as many as seven points to take a 21-14 advantage and eventually an eight point lead, as they closed the set 25-17 and tied the match 2-2.

In the fifth and final set of the evening, UT-Permian Basin used early errors by DBU to go up 3-1.  The Falcons would extend their lead to six points, going up 12-6 over the Lady Patriots.  A late rally by DBU would not be enough, as UTPB claimed the fifth set 15-10 and sealed the match 3-2.
