Box Score THE LEADThe Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team defeated the Newman University Jets 90-86 in overtime as they climb closer to securing to a spot in the Heartland Conference Tournament.
In their fifth overtime game of the year redshirt sophomore
Myles Johnson would lead the Patriots with a game high 23 points and five assists. The trio of
Amari Bryant,
Franklin Uzonwanne, and
Wesley Gipson would all score in double figures with Bryant and Uzonwanne chipping in 13 each and Gipson 12.
In the first half NU would control the lead for the majority of the period and would go into intermission with an advantage of 37-28. The Jets Reggie Baker would score 13 of his 14 points of the night in the first half to give Newman an edge early.
After having no players in double figures and shooting a paltry 44% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc the Patriots would come out on fire in the second half opening up the period on a 14-4 run to take the lead from Newman 42-41. DBU would go on to shoot 72% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc in the second half.
Myles Johnson would lead the charge scoring 14 of his game high 23 points in the second half. DBU would go up by as much as seven points in the period 61-54.
NU would answer back and regain the lead behind Jeremy Espinoza who had 22 points on the night for the Jets. With Newman up 71-70 with :40 remaining DBU's Johnson would slash to the paint to put the Patriots up 72-71. A lay up would help NU regain the lead 73-72, but a free throw by
Tim Simmons who had a game high 10 rebounds on the night would send the squads into overtime.
In OT the Patriots would control the extra period and go up by as much as seven points. With :55 seconds left a layup by
Amari Bryant would seal it for the Patriots 85-79. DBU would go on to ground the Jets 90-86.
