Patriots Upend St. Edward's in Overtime

Box Score

THE LEAD
A pair of free throws by Shannon Lilly with five seconds remaining in overtime lifted Dallas Baptist to a 94-92 win over St. Edward's on Saturday in Austin.  The victory marks the third straight for the DBU (13-8, 7-6) and avenges an overtime loss to the Hilltoppers earlier this year.

After jumping out to a 10 point lead at the half, the Patriots could not hold off a St. Edward's (16-6, 8-6) charge in the second half, as the Hilltoppers came back to tie the game at 76 apiece with 1:17 remaining and eventually forced overtime with the score knotted at 81.

In the overtime period, DBU fell behind by four in the first two minutes before fouls by St. Edward's led to four consecutive free throws by three different Patriots including Myles Johnson, Jordan Pratt, and Franklin Uzonwanne.  A three-pointer from Myles Johnson capped off a 7-0 run by the Patriots and put DBU back on top, 90-87.

Following a made field goal by St. Edward's, Franklie Mgbolu, which trimmed the lead to one, Johnson drove the lane and laid in a bucket with 32 seconds left to put the Patriots back up by three.  The Hilltopper's John Gramlich, who hurt the Patriots in their last meeting, scoring 12 points in overtime, drained a three-pointer with 23 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 92.

With the shot clock off, a drive to the bucket by the Patriots' Lilly with five seconds on the clock, drew a foul from Ramir Burton, where the junior guard would connect on each of his two attempts.  After the two made free throws, a turnover by the Hilltoppers' with one second on the clock sealed the win for DBU.

Myles Johnson led the Patriots with a career-high 29 point effort.  It marks the eleventh time this year in which Johnson has scored 20 points or more in a game.  DBU also received a huge effort from Shannon Lilly, who totaled 22 points of his own.

DBU HEAD COACH – BLAKE FLICKNER, ON THE WIN OVER A TOUGH OPPONENT
"This was a really gutsy win today on the road against a great team.  St. Edward's has proven to be a tough team mentally and physically this year.  They have won close games because they execute and are tough.  That makes it all the sweeter to find a way to out-tough a team like that on the road."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
47 – DBU shot 47 percent from the field, compared to St. Edward's 49 percent.
8 – The Patriots connected on 8-of-10 free throws in overtime.
5 – DBU pulled down five more rebounds than the Hilltoppers, outrebounding St. Edward's 40-35.

UP NEXT FOR THE PATRIOTS
DBU travels to Odessa, Texas, on Monday for a key conference matchup versus Texas-Permian Basin.   The Falcons are 8-5 in the Heartland and are one game ahead of the Patriots in the standings.  DBU knocked off UTPB 98-90 on January 10 at the Burg Center.
