THE LEADNo. 20 Dallas Baptist completed a four-game sweep of Texas Southern to run their win streak to nine consecutive games with a 4-1 victory over the Tigers on Sunday at Horner Ballpark. The ninth straight win matches the longest win streak for DBU (15-2) since the Patriots won nine straight in 2009.
Â
Scoreless into the top of the fourth, DBU starter,
Landon Wilson, surrendered his only run of the game when Jerry Ford scored all the way from second base on a sacrifice bunt by Gerrick Jimenez. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Patriots tied the game on an RBI single by
Camden Duzenack that plated
Matt Duce. Following Duzenack,
Justin Wall delivered a base hit back through the middle that brought home the go-ahead run across the plate in
Drew Turbin.
Â
With a 2-1 lead over Texas Southern (8-11) into the sixth inning, freshman,
Gavin Fritz, came out of the pen for the Patriots and kept the Tigers scoreless into the seventh. With one out and a runner at third, DBU turned to closer,
Brandon Koch, to get out of the jam with the tying run ninety feet away. Koch would end up getting out of the inning unscathed, striking out both Blake Hicks and Zach Howell. The pair of strikeouts made it nine strikeouts in a row for the junior reliever, dating back to his last outing on March 7 at Oral Roberts.
Â
Still up by one into the bottom of the eighth, the Patriots scratched across two more insurance runs on a Duzenack double to right field that brought home both
Tagg Duce and
Nash Knight.
Â
With a 4-1 lead into the ninth, Koch closed out the Tigers, striking out pinch-hitter, Samuel Terry, to end the game.
Â
DBU HEAD COACH, DAN HEEFNER – ON BRANDON KOCH COMING OUT OF THE PEN IN THE 7TH TO CLOSE OUT THE GAME"The save situation really came in the seventh today when they had the tying run at third. Brandon has the ability to come out of the pen and stop a threat and that's what he was able to do with the back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam."
