THE LEADThe Dallas Baptist Baseball Team claimed a 9-8 win over Oral Roberts on Saturday night and in the process, swept the double-header and took the series over the Golden Eagles at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The victory is the third straight win over Oral Roberts this weekend and is the Patriots' tenth win in the last 11 games versus ORU dating back to the Fort Worth Regional Championship game in 2011.
Â
DBU (9-2) wasted no time getting on the board, as
Justin Wall's first home run of the year helped lift the Patriots to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Oral Roberts (6-6) would not go away quietly though, as the Golden Eagles battled back against Patriot starter,
Cory Taylor, to take a 5-4 advantage through five innings.Â
Â
Down a run in the sixth, an 11 pitch at-bat by
Nash Knight with two outs resulted in a base hit to left and set the stage for a Patriot rally. A
Drew Turbin to single up the middle then put runners at first and second, as
Camden Duzenack came to the plate with the tying run in scoring position. Ahead in the count at 1-0, Duzenack drilled a pitch to left that carried over the leaping attempt of ORU left fielder, Logan Domenico, and cleared the wall for his second home run of the year and staked the Patriots to a 7-5 lead.
Â
In the top of the seventh, DBU's
Daniel Salters gave the Patriots some breathing room, as the Patriots' junior catcher ripped a shot to right that hit off the wall for a two run double, putting DBU up 9-5.
Â
A three run seventh though by Oral Roberts closed the gap to 9-8, as the Patriots called on closer,
Brandon Koch, to get out of the jam. With the bases loaded and the tying run ninety feet away, Koch faced ORU's, Anthony Sequira, who came in with a .472 average. Up in the count 1-2, Koch got Sequira swinging to end the inning.
Â
Holding onto a one run lead, Koch proceeded to strike out the side in both the eighth and ninth innings to preserve the one run victory. Koch's seven strikeouts on the night set a new single-game career high for the junior righty and earned him his third save of the season.
Â
DBU HEAD COACH, DAN HEEFNER – ON THE AT BAT BY KNIGHT IN THE SIXTH THAT SPARKED THE RALLY"Without a doubt, Nash had a really great at-bat there and everybody in the dugout recognized that. It was an 11 pitch at-bat and he fouled off nine pitches before he got the base hit into left. One thing we talk about all the time is it's not necessarily the guy who gets it done, but the guy that goes before you and wears that pitcher down and that's what Nash did. He saw 11 pitches and then Turbin follows by hitting the first pitch he sees and then Camden gets one up in the zone and gets the home run."
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS102 –
Brandon Koch eclipsed the 100 strikeout mark in his career tonight and now has 102 K's over the past three seasons.
0 – The Patriots have not committed an error in all three games at ORU this weekend.
